hi all, well today i went to fit my nato hitch and i couldn't get my spare wheel down, the hoist is locked up solid, so i stripped the thing and set about repairing / fixing
i used a trolley jack under my spare and took out the 4 bolts holding the hoist to the member and lowered the whole lot to the ground,

never stripped one before so trial and error
the front slot which we all fit our extended jack handle into seems to run to the opposite side, on closer inspection the end is bevelled over with a press or hammer
![20140102_135912.jpg 20140102_135912.jpg](https://www.landcruiserclub.net/community/data/attachments/25/25001-0eedc91fb9fba2534e18edc7b2433823.jpg)
this is the key to stripping me thinks
![20140102_134057.jpg 20140102_134057.jpg](https://www.landcruiserclub.net/community/data/attachments/25/25002-3910f3cb5c61402057aafe49d517af00.jpg)
see these 6 holes , three on each side, drill out the centre one on both sides, use a centre punch and tap out the old rivets that hold the chain guard in place, you have to remove this to drop out the centre wheel
![20140102_134108.jpg 20140102_134108.jpg](https://www.landcruiserclub.net/community/data/attachments/25/25003-73d48dbb3b95b0fc43c00c1b2492b2e6.jpg)
![20140102_134441.jpg 20140102_134441.jpg](https://www.landcruiserclub.net/community/data/attachments/25/25004-70037dac2445eac625722c9765de2e08.jpg)
you will have to unhook this old spring and fold up out of the way
![20140102_134532.jpg 20140102_134532.jpg](https://www.landcruiserclub.net/community/data/attachments/25/25005-da864a5e165c761540601ff5d29ba506.jpg)
now you can pull out the chain guard
![20140102_135912.jpg 20140102_135912.jpg](https://www.landcruiserclub.net/community/data/attachments/25/25001-0eedc91fb9fba2534e18edc7b2433823.jpg)
with the guard hanging, fit the cranking end of the hoist into the vice and using a small grinding wheel ( goggles and safety glasses please) grind off the sides of the center pin head so it looks like this
![20140102_140426.jpg 20140102_140426.jpg](https://www.landcruiserclub.net/community/data/attachments/25/25006-e79c6ba55d31b824f4e9d18ebc4fdd4a.jpg)
now using a round bar, drive the pin out the other side
![20140102_141455.jpg 20140102_141455.jpg](https://www.landcruiserclub.net/community/data/attachments/25/25007-6318d909d60b6b8e94947c5ca39989d8.jpg)
mine was tight and this seems to have been my problem, the main shaft through the middle was rusty and binding up
so i cleaned up the shaft with emery cloth, bit of grease and fitted in to the wheel again, this was a lot better.
![20140102_142038.jpg 20140102_142038.jpg](https://www.landcruiserclub.net/community/data/attachments/25/25008-3c28390e487ff80c3445c789ef3a4019.jpg)
give this a good clean and grease up
![20140102_142430.jpg 20140102_142430.jpg](https://www.landcruiserclub.net/community/data/attachments/25/25009-dc10dc5dd6e4ce8ad4afc23981e259ac.jpg)
you now want to lay out your hoist like this for assembly just watch you have not twisted the chain, this is your chance to straighten it out.
![20140102_142505.jpg 20140102_142505.jpg](https://www.landcruiserclub.net/community/data/attachments/25/25010-9556547ce4ac9e4d6e561035dfc66573.jpg)
note the way the plate sits there is the hole for the spring, you just put this back into the carrier, the pin when pushed back in will have to be rotated as it sits in a cam off set, just rotate and it will drop back in.
![20140102_142626.jpg 20140102_142626.jpg](https://www.landcruiserclub.net/community/data/attachments/25/25011-a99b0676d44e0f97ac2f8214b8893eeb.jpg)
now slide the chain guard up the chain to fit back into the carrier
![20140102_142839.jpg 20140102_142839.jpg](https://www.landcruiserclub.net/community/data/attachments/25/25012-c4a2f7a595417a8811e4bc4dd1021991.jpg)
if you left the old rivets in, remove them now with a pair of pliers
![20140102_145025.jpg 20140102_145025.jpg](https://www.landcruiserclub.net/community/data/attachments/25/25013-0b11bda5a10f81166656d31827fff520.jpg)
match the two piece and rivet them together.
![20140102_145032.jpg 20140102_145032.jpg](https://www.landcruiserclub.net/community/data/attachments/25/25014-2b9d5bd49b54f01ba7eac1b9f37fb584.jpg)
now back to the main pin.
![20140102_143741.jpg 20140102_143741.jpg](https://www.landcruiserclub.net/community/data/attachments/25/25015-b176480f70655072359b362341426863.jpg)
now this might seem a bit odd, i could have put this in to the lathe and turned a groove for the cir-clip but a lot of you wont have one, so i used a hacksaw and cut a shallow groove, blade flat to the carrier face
![20140102_144029.jpg 20140102_144029.jpg](https://www.landcruiserclub.net/community/data/attachments/25/25016-708e228f8b264f8e157009fcd7ae5efa.jpg)
used a 12.5 cir clip i think this is how you measure these, im using a drill measure for reference
![20140102_144205.jpg 20140102_144205.jpg](https://www.landcruiserclub.net/community/data/attachments/25/25017-b1073654c3d934d9dac588414f4ec001.jpg)
fitted cir-clip
now just give it a turn in your hands, it should rotate with a bit of friction as its now well greased
now refit to your truck
my hoist is well greased as you can see in some of the pics, so the grease is not getting to the main parts so i think this will be a maintenance or fix job for some out there.
hope this helps you out,
edited, many thanks
