Am I correct in assuming that once the pulley mark and cover mark are aligned it means number one is at TDC on compression stroke?!00 series HDTFE 4.2 diesel. The book does not mention compression stroke!!
David

It's the camshaft that determines whether it's on the compression or exhaust stroke - it (camshaft) runs at half engine speed.
So, with both camshaft and crankshaft marks aligned the crank and camshaft are in harmony.
The diesel injector pump marks must also be aligned so that the injectors fire at the correct point in the cycle on the correct stroke.
Bob.

When cylinder one is at TDC on compression stroke, both of the rockers are loose on #1, while both rockers on number 6 are tight.

Great info.so will not have to open up timing belt cover.
Thanks all! I now better understand how the shafts are working

Found the exhaust clearances were tight in 4 out of 6 with 2 at limit ..and the inlets tight in only 2…17thou (but very difficult to measure)adjusted to 20 and 50 thou inlet and exh respectively.
Very lengthy job 3and half hours due to access issues ..Im only 5ft 7” and a bit stiff!!!!!
Engine much quieter now definitely no rattle !
Thanks for tips
