tires sizes

I have bought my wife a 2001 4motion sharan for winter and I need a set of tires..
205 55 16 are fitted what other sizes can I look for on ebay?

225 50 16 ? - got this from Yahoo answers. I just need to spead my bets on searches to try and find some cheap and close by. Or I could just get a set of wheels with them on. Are all vw/Audi wheels interchangeable?

I've recently bought a VW Passat & while searching for the right one I stumbled over many that had Merc AMG wheels fitted! So there must be a cross over there in terms of PCD & holes I wouldn't think that all VW/Audi wheels are interchangeable, for example I would not have thought a Touarge wheel would fit a Polo The other thing to consider isn't the Sharon replicated in the Ford Galaxy & the Seat Alhamera (same vehicles) this may broaden your search Or was that something else

The wider tires will certainly make it more difficult to handle, unless she's driving on a race-track exclusively.
E.g. power steer and track/groove sensibility/climbing

Jonnie, the 205/55s are about the most common size in use today for small/medium passenger vehicles I think your best chance of quality/cheap tyres is sticking with those, unless there's a reason for considering other sizes?
IIRC Rob was selling a set of 4 recently - he may still have them?

As far as alternative sizes go, one of the comparison tools will allow you to compare circumferences of different sizes:
