Want to increase 1HDT sound

Hi guys! I come to you all asking a strange question but hoping I can get some assistance. I own an 80 SERIES 1HDT with a 3" exhaust, however mine seems to put out a higher sounding noise with a whistle when I plant the accelerator. However, I have heard many others that have a much deeper (aeroplane like) noise when they give it some herbs. I know I may sound like a fool wanting to sound louder, but I just can't resist after hearing all these other 80s out grunt my old girl. What route do I take to achieve this? Many thanks in advance!

the whistle you can hear is the turbo mate if u have a straight through exhaust you wont get a deep noise. what you need to do is stick like a cherry-bomb back box at end of the exhaust.

Thanks for the quick reply mate. I know the whistle is the turbo, but when I was at the lights next to another 1hdt today it took off with that deep grunting engine and the whistle wasn't as high. I think the best way to describe it is how the 4.2 patrols sound with the big exhausts.

Welcome Callum, It sounds like the silencer box is taking out the low notes rather than the high ones. Change of box needed by the sound of it. There's a company in Wales (is it Prospeed or something like) that many on here seem to rate highly. Might be worth a visit depending on where you are.

Be good to get some more info on you and your truck and some photos when you get to 15 posts! [emoji4]

Hi mate, I am brand new to this forum. It's good to be here! I wish I knew of it earlier. Im still trying to find my way around at this stage. Im located in Australia and I have owned my 80 for just over a year. It's a '91 GXL 1hdt with all the extras. Pretty well set up for touring. This is an amateur question, but what do you mean by silencer box. Also what do you mean by 15 posts? Cheers!

Ok, the forum has limitations until you put up at least 15 'posts' like this is a 'post' (the written block of text that forms my response) you have made 3 posts.

Silencer, most of us are in the UK but there's many in Oz as well as the US and elsewhere so there's a few different terms. Silencer= muffler, exhaust box, that sort of thing. Not sure what it's called in your neck of the woods (location[emoji6]). It's the big can part way along your exhaust pipe (if you have one!)

Okay that makes a little more sense! Thanks. Yes in Australia (Brisbane, Queensland) it's called a muffler. What do you recommend for that deeper noise? Also what are your thoughts on removing the catalytic converter? Thanks!

Ok, don't think you want to be going all the way to Wales for your exhaust [emoji4] in that case.

I'm not the best to help with this but there's some threads on here so it may be worth doing a search. I've got a feeling there's some ready made stuff in Oz that is just bolt in but your best bet is to find an exhaust builder local to you. There may be some of the guys on here that know where so I expect someone will be along soon.

It also depend where you are in relation to the noise- your truck is going to sound different to you inside it than you outside your mates truck. My truck had a really deep growl after the forward flexible coupling developed a hole. it really sounded like a prime mover until I fixed it for the mot! try bashing your flexi in a bit and see if that helps! some people add a side exit exhaust which helps the acoustics a bit as well

The muffler is a silencer you don't need it so take it off and you will wake the neighbors every time you leave the house . Take the muffler to a custom exhaust specialist and tell them its too quiet and i'm pretty sure they could modify it to suit your what you want . Google exhaust resonator .
