My Bosch PWS 7-115 has shaken itself to uselessness after a mere 3 months. It is used pretty much daily for grinding and cutting so pretty disappointed in its performance.

Going back for a refund but would rather replace with something that is known to be robust enough for professional abuse. So anyone with a strong contender for me to think about?

Look at the DeWalt. Mine's been good for a while now and has suffered some terrible abuse ;)

I had a dewalt 115mm angle grinder for over 9 years. It has now given up the ghost, it was a hell of a good tool. I've replaced it with a hitachi and can say that I wished I'd spent another 40 quid and replaced with a dewalt as theres no finger wobble after using it. Hitachi make the best hand held circular saw but pretty poor angle grinders. Dewalt make crap hand held circular saws!

Thats the thing about tool manufacturers some lines are good and other lines are poor. Just a case of finding out which line is good!

I've had a Makita 115mm grinder for about 8 years, and it has served me very well nicely balanced and easy to use. That said, it only gets weekend use, but has done well.

Makita. Its professional kit.

Toolstation do a Makita lookalike for about £30, and its way better than it should be, I use a couple for ab wheel training.

We use Metabo grinders in our workshops both 4.5" & 9" they are used hard all day long, we have a about 6 or 7 shared between 20 guys in our workshops, apart from changing the brushes when needed and swapping any damaged cables they give very little trouble despite a very hard life.

Plus they now offer a 3 year warranty if the unit is registered on line with Metabo direct within 1 month of purchase IIRC.

Through my working life Makita and Metabo have been the stand out tools along with DeWalt/Elu/B&D Professional. I believe Metabo pot their windings in epoxy or such like so they don't get damaged by all the abrasive dust that enters them. Many folks swear by Milwaukee nowadays. I've had B&D professional 9" and 5.5" for years but they get very little use apart from brick cutting when doing building projects and they seem to have survived hence DeWalt will probably be good as it's the same kit.

I used to sell power tools in a past existence, and the Metabo stuff is properly good. We used to get drills and grinders in to get brushes replaced that were upwards of 10 years old on a regular basis. Got the Makita from a rep, and can't fault it either

+1 for Metabo. Their cordless drill lasted 16 years and my 355mm cut-off saw and 110mm Jigsaw are working well after at least 10 years.

My Bosch 115mm grinder is now 20 years old and its still going strong though its showing its age and I've got a new one for every-day duties.

The manufacturer of the best power tools is Hilti, hands down!

Not cheap though, but the quality and customer service is exceptional! :icon-biggrin:

My 9" grinder is a Bosch professional one, had it over 10 years now and still going strong.

Yes, Hilti make some superb tools. I've also found Bosch blue professional to be superb. Didn't know Hilti made angle grinders (may do, I just don't know) as my only experience is their breakers which are animal proof.

I think as long as it's a pro tool then it should last well but I do know the Metabo offerings are designed to be abused in gritty environments.

My hilti drill has took a lot of abuse and still going, so i hope the grinders are just as good

Thanks for your views chaps, I've gone for a Metabo so will see if that stands the test of time.

Do not forget to register on line to get the 3 year extended warranty.

I would be very surprised if the warranty is needed but well worth the extension just for registering it.

By the time I needed a new gearbox for my Metabo cordless drill they had long deleted any reference to the model (it was 16 years old).

The motor still ran, but I had to scrap it .

They also do a good line in storage cases, the same as the festool ones. Stackable and very tough. Used to be that you got a free metabox with routers and certuan drills but I think they've stopped that.

You won't regret the purchase (I hope!)
