Yep bigger rod, faster filling, but you have to be able to drive them of course. I can run 3.5mm on my little buzz box, but tried some bigger ones once and just about cooked it. Then you have to consider the thickness of what you're welding. No good doing .5mm body panels with 4mm and 400 amps obviously.
 
Cheers , glad i asked because i hadn't give the extra heat needed any thought 3.25mm is the biggest they do anyway which should be fine on top of weld and a 3mm wall

Rods go much bigger than that
Imagine welding a tank turret with a 4mm rod but then you're into huge old style oil filled sets
 
ah but those guys don't shop at screwfix , machine mart in Cardiff would be my next port of call for rods but time saved would be spent going to get them . Speaks volumes about what's available around here that even with one step/slider already done and the other all tacked and ready i don't trust a pro welder to give me back a matching pair .
