Who is doing what maintenance today?

It shurley is Mah - I'za gotta keep that there familee all warm & cosy boy

Actually, I'm stocking up for the winter season of green laning Nick  We loikes our fires big y'know 8-)

Yesterday I changed the steering rack fluid as I wasn't sure if it had ever been changed (140k miles). The old stuff looked a bit like chocolate milkshake  . The steering does feel subtly better with the fluid change - it feels like I am steering/correcting less. I also wanted to correct my off-centre steering wheel down by the steering spacer, but somehow manage to adjust it the wrong way and made it worse... I blame faulty tools.

I also took the front left calliper off to clean and grease the pistons and rubber seals. There was a bit of corrosion build up on the 2 pistons on one side, which I cleaned up. There does appear to be a slight (very little) bit of pitting on the one piston, so I will keep an eye on it. I do seem to have developed a leak after refitting everything though. Looks like it is where the flexi hose connects to the short brake pipe, and possible from the bleed valve too. I might have tightened them too much... If the leak is still there tonight, I will use some teflon tape and order a new pipe. It might be time to buy a brake pipe kit..?

A while back I saw a noticable of grease spattered on the lower control arm from the nearside front drive shaft, so I cleaned it down to see if I could see where it was coming from, from out of the cv boot (nearest the engine end, I assume inner boot ?) today I took a look and and can't see any signs of wear that would suggest the boot is fubar'd, so I've again given it a good clean down and replaced the clamp with a jubilee clip to see if that was where the grease came from, if that cures it I'll still need to pack some grease back in to replace that that I've lost ! Anyone else had this before ?
Which end is which ? as I've just been on milners site and the inner boot is £40 and the outer is only £8 big difference for what looks like a very simular product !!!

Also today I've had to replace the front brakes on the mini cooper due to an advisory from the MOT, the car failed on the rear nearside rear tyre, it was shaped like a 50p piece owing to the fact that the tyres are the run flat variety and aren't worth the space they're designed to save, the tyre size is 205/45/17 so I've ordered a new set of rims and tyres and gone for non run flats and non low profile in 195/60/16, she'll just have to carry a tin of tyre foam and twin barrelled foot pump in her boot (for me to use when she phones me with a flat tyre  )

Come on guys help me with this one please

I can't get to see the diagrams on toyo diy, no longer available by demand of Mr yota !!

The price differences could be that one is a genuine Toyota and one is not. Had the same situation with their track rod ends.

This any use Nick?

EDIT: Or this any better...

Cheers Gav, It's the inner joint boot which was leaking, however no sign of leakage since I put a new clamp on it (yet) !!! when I come to re-pack some grease in there, can it be done by sliding the boot toward the wheel and greasing the tripod bearings or will it need to be removed to get behind the tripod ?

That's the diagram that I found, thanks anyway matey.

My left outer boot, small side, keeps sliding up the axle and leaking grease. The CV angle after the lift probably has something to do with it. So I bought a replacement boot, but have to take the whole drive shaft out and remove the inner joint to replace it...

Fiery's CV boots did exactly the same thing on both sides :) Noticed it just before the Lincomb before the last one so just removed and replaced the boot clamps at that time and have not noticed any further ejaculation from the boots since :D

Outer one on my 100 has done the same after the lift. Very old boot though, will be replacing all of them....well Greg will be

The replacement boot that I have seems a bit softer than the old one which seems more plasticky (rather than rubbery). I think the new one will flex better. I have a new boot on the other side and it has been fine.

can you not use a cone to slide the new boot over the joint?

Nick, so you need to add some grease to your CV. Damn, if only someone made a product called CV grease. Why oh why oh why isn't there such an obvious thi... Oh hang on..

Don't worry Lads. He gets it.

Chris

Chris, if you wern't so large I'd pick you up and throw you :violence-smack:

Goddammit it, I need professor of grammer with me to write on here..........

Hello fellow Toyota Landcruiser owners, would one of you please be so kind as to advice me which CV GREASE to use for my Toyota Landcruiser, or would any CV GREASE be sufficient.

Thank you in anticipation of your forth coming advice.

Nicholas.

As I have an 80 and it takes a lot of CV grease I just get the cheap comma stuff. Im sure most of us on here use it too without issues.

There's more than one type of CV grease?

Damn! This must mean there's more than one type of CV.

Chris

PS
You could, but then who'd listen to all yer bitchin and smoke yer tabs, eh?

How much grease did you put back in and which type did you use Steven ?
I didn't  You know what they say 'a little goes a long way' :) I didn't think that a great deal had escaped to be fair, certainly no more than a tea spoon full  What I've just said will probably worry the purists among us in the same way that putting water, yes water in my cooling system did    ;)

The OEM grease I've seen is lower viscosity than the tubs you get in motor factors. Possibly it extends service life by sloshing about and making sure it's in all the right places or possibly to make sure it's properly distributed in the plunge CV joint which a more viscous grease might get squeezed out of and not return. I did put regular tub CV grease in mine when I rebuilt them ages ago because I had lots left over from my 80 but I would go to the trouble of using OEM or a similar viscosity grease in future on IFS drive shafts. YMMV.
