Windscreen Wipers linkage

Hi all
I am working on a FJ45 and have a problem with
the wiper linkage. On the nearside (its a right hand drive)
the spindle that the wiper arm mounts to, spins freely in the tube
that mounts to the scuttle. On the offside the spindle seems to be siezed
to the outer tube, still after a tin of plus gas, The wiper will only move across the screen
if the nut holding the outer tube to the scuttle is very loose.
So that both tubes and mounting nut move.
Has anyone got any tips or advice as to how to get the wipers working.
Thanks, I hope you've worked out what I am trying to say.

John

Hi John,

Sounds to me as if the linkage has caught up on one or more of the stops.
Take the cover off the motor, remove the motor and disconnect the linkage
Take off the covers (inside behind the vents)[you'll need to take off the dash cushion if fitted] (or partially drop the screen) and as you push/pull the linkage see if the linkage is fouling on the stops which are each end of the small brackets that retain the spindle. Some early 40s have retaining screws for the spindle.
You should be able to work out if any of the stops is bent or is fouling the lnkage and adjust it.
When you got it sorted work the linkage from the motor end before putting back together and check after each section is tightened.
Takes a bit of patience to get them right.
Hope that helps

Sorry, should have said stop the wipers in the vertical position, then start disconnecting
