Just a little lower ball joint reminder for everyone...!

My truck never needed towing! As I recall the problem was it just wanted to keep on going.

I had such a bad creaking/groaning noise the other day the the 95 went to the garage on a breakdown truck. Also i hadnt driven it much on the lanes for a month or so & thought it was a little loose in the corners & assumed it was the IFS suspension bushes. It turns out that a track rod end is shot & the drop links on the front anti roll bare are shot.
But ive had my own dramas with a lower ball joint letting go.In my case there wasn't any noise or play as the joint was seized. perhaps a sticky on the 90 forum would be a good idea? IMAG0160.jpg

You're on form today Shayne. Still, if there's ever need for 12 calender shots of a 90 with its bonnet open in dramatic surroundings...

And i haven't driven The Beast since , still trying to convince myself it was the right thing to do :confusion-shrug:

On the bright side i've grown more attached to Helen's 1KD90 as consequence :confusion-seeingst:

I suspect there’s a reason Toyota put an IFS Hilux into the Dakar and not a Landcruiser anymore
As mentioned above here, it's only a problem on the medium duty cruisers. The HD cruisers have the lower ball joint the right way around.

One of my lower ball joints is beginning to lose a little bit of grease, how bad would the problem be? Don't feel any play but is there a specific way to look for it?

Everything else feels solid...

I think they still are the original ball joints.

Wow I can't remember how I used to test mine , Jack it up put a plank under the tyre to lift the wheel while looking at the joint which should have no up and down play maybe .

The LBJ is not weak , the design floor is that when they do fail its catastrophically . Typically the boot fails allowing abrasives to get inside sanding away at what should be a tight fitting joint . Takes time any many miles to achieve failure .

Yeah and the upside down design makes it a bit more dangerous.
My LBJ rubbers have not cracked in any way. But is you rub your finger at the underside of the rubber you notice some grease there. So it is beginning to slowly leak out of there I guess.

I've got a trip up next week hope they hold and then i'll replace it

Most are completely unaware of it until it lets go so if you have looked at it and figured its safe for now it surely will be .

At 120K miles I decided to change the Lower and upper ball joints. They didn’t appear to be about to fail but changed them as preventative maintenance. I got genuine ones from my local Toyota dealer
