I don't think isolation works. The salt/water bridges the insulation point and creates a perfect battery. I would have thought a couple of cupfulls of grease over every contact might be better.
I think in an ideal world you would do both. The benefit of the isolation is it doesn't require much maintenance and is immune to jet washing etc. If it is sat in water, particularly salt water, then you are right and the isolation won't help. Avoiding using stainless fastenings also helps.
