Just had a chat with a dealer about a 1999 LC and he said that the horn wasn't working and his partner had tried to fix it but now the airbag warning light is on. Is this likely to be a big issue to fix? Is it something I should be worried about (indicator of something else)?

My guess would be the yellow and black round bit that fits in between the wheel and the stalk.

I bought a used "squib" on ebay for my collie when the indicator stalk started shutting off my headlights . That's the black and yellow round thing lol , turned out i had a female connection on both squib and steering column so in the end i only swapped the indicator stalk . Its a very easy job to replace the squib , on my truck anyway , and i can't see others being much different . Just disconnect your battery (always do this while messing with airbags) remove the steering wheel then theres 4 or maybe 6 screws to take out and just unplug and remove the squib . Plug the new one in , screw it up and Bobs your uncle .

I have heard of airbag lights being on as a result of tampering that won't switch off until somebody with one of those diagnostic laptop things resets it which might cost between 10 and 40 quid if you steer clear of main dealers which makes me wonder why a car dealer hasn't already done it if the problem was that simple .

The light must come on, and then go off, after a second or so after you have turned the ignition on. MOT failure otherwise.

The other option is that when they "fixed" the horn, they didn't leave the battery disconnected for long enough before taking the steering wheel apart. This means that there was still a residual signal going to the drivers airbag, so when it was put back together it showed up.

It might be a main dealer only code clear, so if you're interested in it, get them to pay for it to go to a main dealer to get the code cleared. I had something similar when I had stuff under the seat in my Volvo, hit a speed bump a bit quick and knocked the side airbag cable. This required a visit to the main dealer to get it cleared, as the local specialist couldn't do it on their system.

Hope that helps,
