All ignition lights remain lit with engine running, although the only thing thats at fault is the alternator not charging the batteries, oil pessure is ok, as is the coolant level & brake fluid. Very occasionly the lights will go out, but as soon as the engine is shut off & then restarted they're back on again. The lights do flicker from bright to dim when the indictor switch is used, maybe pointing to a bad earth.
Has anyone else come accross this problem or got the faintest clue where to start looking ???????????

Classic 80 problem. As soon as the alternator stops charging the dash lights up like a Christmas tree. Fix the alternator issue and all will be fine.

With Ian here. Probably time to give the alternator a check over anyway. The brushes slide in little square holders and they jam very easily. Take it to bits, give them a clean and reassemble. The plug on the alternator can be a tricky trickser too. Pull that and give a squirt before plugging back in. Could be an earth of course, something as simple as a bad battery clamp, but once you have given all those a wiggle, I'd go to the alternator. A lot easier to get to with the air box removed and the driver battery tray I find. Unless you have no aircon fitted then it's a five minute job.

If the above does not work is your rear wiper working? If not bad earth in tailgate.
