rumbling when coming off throttle, auto vx

as topic title, i've got a slight rumbling when coming off the throttle, which sounds like i'm going over a cattle grid, more apparent when on the motorway.
also have a high pitched whine when on the throttle, which goes when off the throttle.

its a 93 vx auto.

i'm going to assume its clutch

Could be play in a diff pinion, easily checked by disconnecting the prop at the diff end and having a wiggle. I'd start at the front.

Could also be a chipped tooth in a diff.

Have you checked the wheel bearings for play?

i havent checked anything yet, was looking for inspiration before getting stuck in!
it really isnt noticable until at higher speeds, and the rumbling is very slight and doesnt last more than half a second or so.

does the auto make a slight whine when accelerating all the time, or is it just mine?

Mine does it too, I've always thought that was normal now you've got me worried, do I have a problem too

i've got no idea if its normal, i've only had the car a few weeks

maybe my rumbling is normal too... probably not
