'SWAMPY' MY 02 LWB 3.0 D4D GX Colorado

looking good mate, how did your snorkel smash a window? did a tree branch snag it? I'm tempted to fit one to mine but 700mm is the stock wading depth which is pretty impressive, my d2 disco is 500mm

Wow you have been busy Steven, since I last looked at your thread nearly a month ago. Truck is looking good.

I'm glad the ARB bits turned up OK and fitted.

Swampy looks amazing chap have you raised the suspension? Sorry if you've already mentioned this
I've not raised the suspension myself, but it had been raised using an Iron Man type 'B' lift with 10mm front trim packers before I bought it and that is what you can see in all of the previous photos. In the not so distant future I shall be replacing the rear springs for 80 series LC standard front springs and then on my super perfect ideal wish list popping OME 882 front springs and shocks with 80 series standard rear shocks and some home made 10mm spacers for the rear bump stops :)

On the strength of your pictures I've bought one of those Ring LED lights;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121229894105?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

They certainly look impressive.
You will not be disappointed Chas and to be honest I'm considering the purchase of a second one :) We've been away for New Year and I took it with me, it's been very useful :) And now were back I've been using it still. I can't believe that I managed without it now!

All is in this thread here http://www.landcruiserclub.net/forums/showthread.php/44508-What-a-weekend?highlight=snorkel+glass, but to be frank right from the day that I fitted it I thought what a waste of time, effort and money it was and in fact my man hood was a lot bigger than it gave the impression of :) ;) So bravely I shall not be fitting another :)

Cheers m8 :) :) :) The ARB bits were absolutely perfect and I'm sure that Jon & Gav were happy also :) ;)

My Ring inspection light has arrived and is every bit as good as you say Steven.

I won't fit a snorkel because i don't see the point as is i can wade through a metre depth of water and it will only reach the underside of my wheel arch and if you cross a running river deeper than that the water would weigh more than the truck so your asking for trouble . Also axle breathers generally end a few inches beneath the bonnet which is another reason to avoid water deeper than a metre . Snorkels must hurt fuel consumption on long runs due to aerodynamics and realistically on how many lanes (most of which were originally old horse and cart roads) are you likely to encounter very deep water ?

Shane, snorkels don't make a jot of difference to fuel consumption. I know, I have tried it. No snorkel, with snorkel - facing forward and facing backward. No difference. Not detectable anyway. Same as adding spotlights or something. Now, adding a roof rack or massive winch bumper well that's a different story. The axle breathers actually have a little rubber seal in them and they close and seal. People talk a lot about raising them and whilst I wouldn't say it does any harm, I don't think it's entirely necessary. Mr T built a car that would wade 700 mm and put breathers where he did. If the axle is warm and gets cooled quickly by entering water, the very slight vacuum effect should shut the breather cap in time. Better to keep the breathers in good order. Milner sell them and I have stuck a couple of new ones on as the others were indeed solid. Having said that in preparing my current vehicle, I shall probably extend them just because I can. But I'm with you on the value of snorkels. I think that they are one of the first things that many people fit and probably the last thing that they need. Even most off road stuff that I do doesn't need one.

Wading rivers on a trip of a life time is perhaps different. If my travels take me further afield in the future, I might have to fit one.

Thanks for that Chris i was thinking to add raised breathers as tide rather than rivers are my main concern (see pic below) but if standard breathers close as long as water is entered slowly i'm sure theres no need . Better order oem breathers as i very much doubt mine have moved at all since the truck was new so it would be a miracle if they still can .

My brother wondering if he could drive his boat home yesterday .

We used them on our Land Rovers in Norway not to raise our wading depth but as a safety blanket in case we either judged the depth wrong and waded too deep, or driver error during a water obstacle though poor technical skills. For those reasons, it is the only reason as to why I am thinking about fitting one to mine. Where I drive and will be driving the snorkel will be a good asset to have :)

OK, got some more done :)

My main focus has been to get the storage system that I had installed in Fiery transferred over to Swampy, but it required a fair bit of fetling before this was possible!

First job was to remove the tab from off of the back edge. This used to tuck under the rear seats of Fiery and was the main fixing point.
IMG_8040_zpsde5b7aa0.jpg

With this removed I needed to find a new way of securing it into the rear of Swampy and decided to cut and fit another piece of ply to the bottom of the unit thus allowing me to use the rear seat fixing point and keep the fixings flush. I put the unit into the rear of the truck and shut myself in with it. I then spent the next 10/15min moving it about and trying different positions till I had what I wanted and marked a bold pencil line across the back of it onto the carpet to give me the fixing position. I then fitted the new fixing bolts all to the same height and lowered the unit down onto them using the pencil line to locate it. Then sitting on top of the unit I rocked it back and forth till the bolt heads had marked their positions into the ply.

IMG_8045_zpsa5d8591f.jpg

I then set about drilling all of the holes that I wanted.

IMG_8047_zps7b918759.jpg

I blow torched away some of the paint so I could get a few decent glue patches down before finally fitting the new bit of ply.
IMG_8048_zps9760a7a7.jpg

Popped in a few screws to hold it down.
IMG_8049_zps4154cb9e.jpg

IMG_8050_zps3b05b7cf.jpg

Job done, sunken fixings.
IMG_8051_zpsf5e696d4.jpg

A couple of coats of paint.
IMG_8052_zps24130f09.jpg

IMG_8053_zps8d304654.jpg

Put it into the back of the truck and bolted it down.

IMG_8173_zps054b63ac.jpg

IMG_8174_zpsbfefb27c.jpg

Because the storage unit now sits a little higher the work surface support leg is now just a smidgen to short unless it's resting on the edge of the box and this was just a little to likely to slip off at some point, so I popped a nail into the corner and drilled a whole in the bottom of the support leg to locate it.

I also fitted a Galv' Besa Box lid up under the left hand lip to hange my new inspection lamp from off of. It's also on the same side as the 12volt accessory socket so it can be charged while hanging.

I also got my Off-Road Kit storage box in and re-fitted.
IMG_8195_zps83c114c0.jpg

Because I can now get it pushed further back than when it was in Fiery I had to re-drill the fixing holes.

Steve do you still have the dimensions for the winch tray laying around? It would save me a lot of time measuring up :) :) :)

I can honestly say that I don't remember taking any dimensions. It was a far more organic thing that just became the correct size and shape as I toiled over it. Here's the link to the thread if that helps http://www.landcruiserclub.net/forums/showthread.php/46357-Winch-carrier-for-Fiery-(née-Free-Steel-)

Was that your truck I photographed outside Maplin in Chelmsford on Saturday? :)

It sounds good, but I gotta stop spending this month! If you still have it in a few few weeks I'll take it off you!

That was a lot of work involved in that haha! Erm it was not me as I was fixing the land rover, It may have been the wife? But there are a few green land cruisers around Chelmsford.

Yes, thanks Ben, saved me bodging Gav's diff , Gav doesn't know he should be grateful yet but I'm sure he will be :icon-cool:

Yours is still in bits Steven, more in bits than when it arrived :whistle:There was a bit of Lincomb where the pinion goes but only a tiny bit so you must have washed most of it out already.

I forgot there was a swing out spindle I'd started already in the lathe so I had to finish that before I could make a start on your solid pinion spacer which is what this will be

I'm very grateful Ben, thanks man  (I'll find out for what in the fullness of time )
