My 120 has the annoying turbo whistle, when I test drove a 150 a few years ago I didn't hear any whistle. What's the difference between the turbos on the 120 and 150 series?
Cheers

All turbo's whistle just most of it is lost in the exhaust muffler .

Turbo Diesels running well with lots of low rev torque you can usually hear the turbo spooling up, its one of the coolest sounds ever, love hearing the sound from my 120 thoughthe 70 series 3 litre was better for this.
Not quite in the same league as my 14 litre Cummins engined truck back in the 80's which sounded glorious, turbo whine from 800rpm, but grateful all the same.

Its miserable gutless engines not getting enough fuel hence yawning gaps of turbo lag that don't whistle.

OK they're not turbochargers, but is there any sound that can stir your loins more than a Deltic in full thrash superchargers adding to that two stroke joy.

You will if you have a hole in the exhaust .

Another advantage of a 3" exhaust is it lets me hear the cool sound of turbo spooling up .

Silent vehicles should be banned for being the most dangerous on the road . Pedestrians walkout in front of them and I still remember some 30 odd years later temporarily fitting a factory exhaust to a scrambler motorbike so i could nip into town to get spare parts . Felt like every junction somebody in a car tried to wipe me out .

Weird that, mine's always been noisy. I'll drive my mate's LC4 and see what it sounds like...

The 3" pipe reference pinged a memory, on one of my Cummins engined trucks the flexible exhaust pipe coming off the turbo snapped clean off, considering there was no exhaust system at all it wasn't as loud as one might have expected, but the howl from the turbo was something to behold, was quite disappointed when i had it fixed.
In later years my first car transporter was an old Iveco, the cowboy outfit i worked never serviced anything, the thing was gutless and when i pulled the air filter out it was stuffed with dust and debris, i binned the thing, obviously it ran a hell of a lot better sans blocked filter again you could hear the turbo clearly.

Wonder if on my 120 the turbo being clearly audible is because the butterfly in the EGR intake mod, plus clean EGR? also running a K&N filter from which you can heare more intake roar than with a paper filter in place.
By the way the amount of torque that has been unleashed by the EGR mod is impressive.

My 120 has always whistled mate, even before the tuning (cat out, snorkel and EGR plate ).

I made a video today but I couldn’t upload it onto the forum.
Any ideas why it won't upload?
Cheers

The loudest whistle is from the turbo area. I can hear it clearly from inside the car while driving...

Can anyone with a 120 diesel listen to the video and tell me if it's louder than your 120?
Cheers
