Who is doing what maintenance today?

Painted calipers? Now there's an idea. Not sure about red though. Gold might be nice.

Well, seeing as I have a couple of days off and I am not going to Scotland for a shoot, I am going to:

Swap big end bearings (only 70k on clock so should be interesting experiment)
Swap driveshafts and CVs on the front (spares built up already)
Swap the OEM front diff for my JW special
Check housing on front locker for corrosion
Good coat of Kurust underneath (where I have missed)
Fettle the handbrake mechanism a bit
Anything else I can sort whilst under there that I come across

Overalls on - here goes :handgestures-fingerscrossed:

Chris

Cheers Carl. All brakes and discs off, hubs off, shafts out and front diff on the floor. So much mud in the brakes, no wonder I was having handbrake issues. There were stones in there going round and round. Water has got into the front hubs and some mud too! No idea how but the CVs are rusted even sitting in a blob of grease like they do. It's a mess in there Jim, but not like we can't fix it. Just sump top get off now and BEBs out.

Time for Chinese.

Chris

Big service over last 2 days:

Oil and filter

air filter (on order from yota)

Fuel filter

check belts and hose (replaced cracked section on extended front diff breather)

had a look see at front wheel bearings and gave them a touch more grease

reset pre load on the way back out (obviously)

ordered the washers for the diffs and transfer case drain and fill plugs (did not know they had washers until i was checking the torques settings in FSM!)

got the hypoid oils ready for changing all the diff and transfer oils later in week

nipped up fan belts

distilled water in batteries

greased prop shaft uj's

checked brake pads

red rubber grease under the rubber boots / piston surfaces

bled brakes

checked everything else i could find / remember

Add to the four day marathon:

Rebuild one swivel entirely. Wiper seals, top and bottom bearings. I think that this is partly where the outside was getting in.

I am so ready for a lie down now. I don't work that hard when I'm being paid!

I shall post the BEB results on a new thread.

One final credit to Wildsmith Industries for a magnificent front diff. I just had to put that into this car after having it built for GW. The one I had in seems perfect, but you can't have something like this and just sit and look at it. Well, actually I can. So, it's in.

Actually everything went well, just had to dodge the showers and doing everything at ground level is so much harder. Oh for a ramp with a bench next to it.

Number one on the list for when I win the lottery, Oh, and a garage big enough for a fleet of Landcruisers 8-)

I know how you feel old man :D ;) When I was doing my front axle I got so stiff & fed up of crawling out for this & that I actually called the wife on me mobile to come out & push some bolts closer to me  Mind you I did have a front axle on my chest

replaced rear shocks on our Subaru Forester after it failed MOT last week on these... and had to make up a new short section of brake line with my flaring kit, since the brake line goes through a bracket hole in rear-shocks... and when trying to undo old brake union, the pipe twisted with is... snap...
the forester is 9yrs old, and much rustier underneath than the 11yr old Landcruiser...
..but the landcruiser hasn't lived in Aberdeenshire (which gets a lot of snow in winter = road salt) for 11yrs, only 2

Finally replaced the front diff oil and plugs/gaskets for the diff. Greased the U/Js. The cold chisel worked a treat to get the old drain plug out.

No metal on the magnet, but some evidence of water in there - some emulsification evidence ... Now to check the diff breather

Fitted my Alien snorkel. Took about 6 or 7 hours in the end and looks OK.

I decided that a job like this needed new drill bits as my other 3 sets look a lot like drill bits but none of them seem to make holes deeper than 0.5mm... unless I'm drilling cheese. So I bought a set of DeWalt HSS bits that are absolutely brilliant! I will never buy cheap drill bits again.

Had my tracking done today. Is it me or is my cruiser just running like a new one today? What a difference; it was quite a bit out and took some heating and grunting to get it right, but boy was it worth it. £24 well spent.
The camber is slightly out on the hub that I rebuilt last week. OK not much but the chap said that I needed to add shims to the top of the swivel to bring the top of the wheel out a bit. Now, sure I did reshim that part of the hub to change the preload on the hub with the new bearings and all, but how do you change the camber on an 80? I have been though it on my pad and I can't see how adding a shim changes the camber. The preload - yes. Looked in the FSM and can't find mention of that either. Now they are used to LR's so maybe that's it. They are really good blokes and excellent tyre fitter who have looked after me for 30 years, but on this occasion - could they be wrong? The bearings sit in the swivel - fixed, and the cap and bottom arm have a pin / spigot that goes through the middle of the bearing. They don't orbit around to give different angles, the outer race is driven into the cannon ball. Maybe my axle is bent. I stress that it's out by a very very small amount.
Huh?

Not really maintenance, but spent a happy couple of hours stripping my spare rear axle into parts. Never been in there before. Nice and straightforward. Now got spare diff, shafts, locker etc and all the associated bits on the shelf. Just need to get the garage organised with some proper shelving. It's a tip in there.
Might be tempted to have a look at my existing rear hubs at some point. Wasn't much grease left in the ones off GW.

Installed a wireless remote for LB winch. Not reason, just because I could. It was a ebay special (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WIRELESS-WINC ... 7789649502) and at £25 it's a no brainer.

Half the price of the equivalent one from Devon4x4, and it comes with 2 remotes.

Only issue I had was the wired remote on LB switches ground as well as positive and it took me a while to figure out what the extra wire was for. Had to hardwire ground in the end...

Fitted new winch on the 70, wireless fobs as well, tres posh
