Who is doing what maintenance today?

Changing the front axle control arm bushes on the 80. PO put split poly bushes in about 18 years ago, which I wanted to change back to OEM. Should be a nice easy job to drop the arms off, but not when the bolts are rusted solid into the sleeves. One bolt came out easily. No amount of heat, hammering, or cursing would budge the other 5. Thank god for reciprocating saws, and a good blade.

Noticed a small leak on my inlet manifold last week, probably due to the higher boost pressure from the new Gturbo, so took off the inlet manifold, cleaned it all up & fitted new gaskets this afternoon, all pretty straight forward & hopefully cured. Will give it a good run tomorrow.

Did usual 5000 mile oil change and AHC bleeding. I did full AHC flush over a year ago and now did yearly maintenance AHC bleed. It took about 1.2 litre to bleed all 4 sides but wasted some while filling the reservoir. I will see how much is in the can exactly and add it to classified section if anyone needs.

Busy day today, swap winter/summer wheels over on the Forester and service the brakes at the same time, then wheels off the 120 and service the brakes on that plus general checkover for MOT end of this month.

later.....my knees are protesting.

later still, flew thru yon MOT, reckon she'll still be on the road when i'm pushing up weeds.

The squeek or "chirp" at idle from the clutch release arm reappeared this week so got underneath to lube the release arm pivot. Should be OK another several thousand miles.

Did a bit of work on the 80 this morning, as I've had an annoying squeal periodically from the alternator belts I took advantage of an early Sunday morning and changed all 3 belts and the alternator. Fundamentally there wasn't a deal wrong with the charging unit but I had a 100 series one spare which is apparently a 120 amp one so I fitted it. Also greased the prop U/J's, checked the levels.
Just a bit of packing and we're away to Wales laning soon.

Following on from yesterday, I remembered last time we were out in the 80 it had a tendency to pull to the left under braking and sometimes a whiff of warm brake.
Getting the front wheels off the floor ( with a "Toyota jack" obviously) I found the drivers wheel pretty hard to turn, so seized calliper then. I'd often thought to check the front pads as they are subject to quite a lot of mud and water and also the bigger tyres take more stopping.
I had some rebuilt callipers on the shelf, not rebuilt by me I might add just waiting to be used. Changed both and fitted new Toyota pads and after Maria helped be bleed the brakes even braking was restored.

The culprits, I think I've had my moneys worth out of those pads.

Yes, looks like you deffo had your monies worth out of them for sure!

I've been quiet for a while, truck has been largely in dry dock since Christmas. Getting back to using it here and there, so I did a full fluid service, greased props, and checked it all over. It will need a handbrake rebuild later in the year but the tester was happy enough.

So being that essential works are done.. it was on to the entirely non essential...

This Android head unit was living in my daily driver (09 Ford Kuga - parted ways with its turbo last week so I'm parting ways with the car). Installed in the truck, it fits really well. Very snug in the opening after a rub of a file. I've survived the last 16 years in the 90 without a reverse camera, but it had one so why not.

That's a nice retro fit camera / stereo, looks good! Always handy reversing up to trailers or such.

What's the thing under your ashtray, displaying temps? Outside air temps?
And what's the display above your cigarette lighter that's currently off, displaying 8.8.8?

I've got one exactly the same, inside and outside temp. The outside temp is measured via a remote sensor which I fixed behind the front bumper. It also has an audible ice warning when temps get low enough.

Thanks, the stereo has Android Auto which is the main reason for putting it in, but the camera is handy.

The temp gauge is from the middle aisle in Lidl from a good few years back. Temp probe is wired on it so it had to go through the bulkhead grommet and is attached behind the passenger headlight. I also fitted a strip of led lights into it, and it's wired to light up with the headlights on. It's surprisingly accurate for something that cost a fiver.

The little display is a voltage meter, I have it wired to a switch. Keeps an eye on battery condition, but also gave instant confirmation when the alternator packed up a few years ago.

This was my solution. I'd bought the socket, did the hub rebuild and only then thought, " how can I use my torque wrench on that?". An old socket, a bolt, a drill and 10 mins later this appeared.

My socket mod was tongue in cheek , I only added the torque settings so i never need to look for them again .

Holes I drilled in it so i could slip a bar through to undo the nut after a C.V broke .

Mine came with a plate so wrench fits but neither of my torque wrenches go down to 5.4Nm .

The socket itself must be 7inches long though so as tight as i can get it with bare hands is my 5.4
