always think 4x4's look a bit like a greenhouse with wheels on until the windows are tinted  that looks much better Carl :)

Well, I pumped myself full of painkillers, gritted my teeth and ventured out onto the drive where I stripped the rear hubs and drive shafts. It was clear that they'd never been disturbed since leaving Tokyo nearly two decades ago. The cone washer were welded in their holes. Anyway, all came apart fine in the end. The locking washers (which are a bit of an odd affair) were actually slightly loose. They are locked in place with two screws into the locking plate and there didn't seem to be any wobble, but the pre-load was .4 lbs.Yes, half a pound. The grease had pretty much turned into soup, but the bearings were perfect. Same ones as the front - which I hadn't realised.

Anyway, cleaned out, re greased, reassembled and torqued up. That's another job off the list. If I can stand and walk tomorrow, I shall do the last swivel bearings and wiper seals. Then folks, I really am just abut at the end of the rebuild. Been for a spin and just cannot believe how smooth it is. Going like a bomb too.

I remembered the tip on locking the rear diff before pulling the shafts.

Is it time for a new truck do we think?

no mate .... you've put in some serious hard work to get this one back to great standards .... why not just relax and enjoy it

Carl, I was trying to tempt Crispin out of hiding. I have no intention of selling it, but whenever I say something like that a queue usually forms

It's like catching donkeys with strawberries. Trust me.

Yes, I thought that Jon, it looked OK and there weren't any really signs of wear,, hardening etc, but replacing them is on my list. Not a big job to go back in there. There wasn't actual liquid, but the grease looked pretty mashed. Under the dirty layer the grease in the hub was still fresh and clean.

Chris

Finished off the dinitrol underneath and in the wings. I do wonder why there is more surface rust on the offside of the truck???

Topped up the silicone oil in the fan.

Any before/after pics... Does the RC800 needs an overcoat? Is this the same as Kurust?

Sorry for the multiple questions - keen to do mine soon...

Finally rebuilt the front axle that i stripped over a month ago...

Apologies no pics. You can overcoat if you wish, dries on it's own to a pretty tough semi gloss black finish. I ll be leaving as is.

Ive not used kurust but I would have thought they are all pretty similar. Do pull your sidelights and look inside the front wings.

While routing around in my shed a couple of weeks ago I stumbled over enough component parts to reconstruct an AISIN free wheeling hub for Zuks :) As I've been sloshing so much Diesel around my front axle just of late I gave them all a good clean :)

Today I married all of the cleaned component parts together to create a wonderfully smooth operating hub if I say so myself :D

Soon to be seen on ebay :D

Unable to sit still, I pulled my front axle apart for what is hopefully the last time, and replaced the swivel bearings and wiper seals. All original parts courtesy of Milner. The swivel bearings that came out were Koyo Hi Cap. These are £6 each x 4 and the wiper seals at £14 per side.

Here's the old cannon ball just in case someone has never seen one.

I took the opportunity to get some CV grease worked in around the back.

The old seals were stuffed and clearly had been fitted by the now infamous spanner monkeys. They'd slit the felt and rubber washers rather than put them over the end of the knuckle.

New parts went on a treat. The old bearings felt a bit rough when installed but when I cleaned them up later in the parts washer, they barely turned at all by hand. They actually seemed to index. I had a closer look and it appears that having been sitting for 8 years, they had rather settled in. They had flat spots on the rollers where water had lain in them, rusting them away. Smooth as silk now.

Bit of a shame to expose them to all that Lincomb grott. But I'm going to, obviously.
