Who is doing what maintenance today?

Interesting afternoon, after 8 days of mot prep work including a marathon with brakes, the truck failed on 1 thing only -
a rot hole in N/side sill right at back (knew it was there but forgot about it).
The brakes are a revellation since the LSPV fell off, forwards backwards superb ( sideways I've yet to find out.)
Not saying it would be a good plan to get rid of it permanently but was inquisitive enough to try, need others to drive it and
form opinions.
Pedal doesnt sink anymore than an inch if that at anytime.

Welded patch over hole this evening.
Chris S. no longer covered in Dot 4. :)

Oil and filter change today, last one done 5,000kms ago.

Thought this was a dying hobby in SA, but yesterday my brothers LC was stolen from outside Chapmans Peak Hotel (for those that know it)- broad daylight, 2pm, whilst having lunch. Heard the screech of his bakkie LC 76 being driven off at speed.

So after the oil change also fitted a "kill" switch from the immobiliser to the inside of the cab - well hidden so unless you know what your looking for, and exactly where to look, the truck will never start when switched off. Should make it a little harder for the skollies to steal when I'm catching a graze!!
.
Know the hotel well,

Probably the shack dwellers from Hout Bay.

Have you seen just how expensive that place is getting now?
probably an overspill from Khayelitsha.

How the flock the government lets this happen in HB I don't know.
And to think I was just about to push the button there a few years ago.

removed, inspected, greased and refitted both props, tightened front diff pinion nut a bit, changed rear diff pinion oil seal, changed the oil in both diffs, replaced rear brake pads and the caliper rubbers/seals.

Today all 4 calipers removed, stripped, de-rusted,primed ,glossed, reassembled with new seals etc, refitted, bled up and road tested. No more sticking brakes!!
Soon be resurrected A1 ALL after its 4 year sabbatical. Can't beat a good auto.

changed front brake pads, inspected hubs and nipped up the bearings, played with various bits of RAM mount :)

Removed my air box and dried it out. Seems like a [strike:55atabwo]bit[/strike:55atabwo] lot of water is getting in there. At first I thought it might be from the snorkle head, but after turning it around and going back through a puddle, I was still smoking like a trooper. After closer inspection I think it's either comming in through the rubber bung at the bottom of the ari box or through the air pipe that joins in from the side. There is a foam seal that is a bit loose, so once dry I will re-install but add loads of sealant, and see if that helps.

More fuel pump twiddling. happy now. gobs of torque from about 1200 rpm. easy to drive and keep most of the gear changes below 2000 rpm

just tickling the throttle has her picking up her feet quite nicely thank you.

Took out the little bit of slack in the throttle cable so now as soon as you touch the peddle it responds.

emptied the water out of the drivers side headlight, dried it with a hair dryer, ran some sealant round where the glass and plastic are joined and refitted. Put a blob of weld on a hole in the exhaust, had it retested and passed :D

Removed the remainder of the mud and gloop i got stuck in on Sunday evening. (nearly three hours to winch out, was stuck tight - the track which looks innocent enough, the surface look a bit soft but just breaks apart and down you go on one side. lockers on, gentle on the power and dug itself in and over - found evidence of others who had also been stuck in the same spot broken straps, small tree pulled over (pity they didn't tidy up the odd bits they left lying around). Ill turn back next time when i get the feeling i should.

did have a nice camp after that - tried out my new hennessey hammock - very impressed, even in very strong gusting winds and the rain early Monday morning - nice and dry and toasty.

stripped front and rear callipers passenger side and got the much and stones out of them
dug mud out places i did not think it would ever get to

sprayed paint on the front axle (scraped it a lot getting her out)
sills on passenger side needed attention
polished out the scratches (well the ones that could come out on the front wing and passenger door)
rebuilt the bottom of the front arch so i could refix the mud flap that got torn off

turbo sounds louder on whistle today - on inspection found a split in the turbo hose from turbo to air intake, gaffer tape for now, new hose tomorrow to be ordered.

Stopped by milners today. Bought new difflock accuator. When laning in derbyshire
And on hollinsclough used problematic rear difflock and it disengaged ok this time. Just cos i had bought a new one.
Stopped buy at Chris's place to pick up spare alternator and look at machine tool porn!
Thanks for cuppa, georgina needed it after hollinsclough lanes

No worries. Lovely to meet you both.

I'm sure they'll take the actuator back. But knowing the Collie ones as I do, I'd keep it handy.

Chris

sounds like that was hard work Adrian! I ran various power feeds and wired up the computer and radio on Sunday, sealed the 3rd row window trim strips today, bit tame :)

Well, today I shall be preparing the 80 for her first MOT in my hands.
I have had this 80 since last May, I have had to rebuild the engne, and now it's time, tommorrow morning at 09:30.

So today I have to wash and check her over.....here's hoping.

I have to thank Jon for getting the 80, ...always wanted one after chasing him across salisbury Plain, and then water lane, plus a few others in Hampshire, in my little red 70..

Cheers jon....pi***Ng down with rain and I have to get out there and wash it off....make it nice and clean, at least they wil think I care about it..

Went to Motor Climate to have my aircon regassed / checked / diagnosed (wasn't working when I bought it) found a tiny leak on the passenger side condenser pipe joint which they fixed so aircon all working for not a lot of money :)

Failed MOT this morning  ....Nearside front wheel bearing and shock absorber...so not too bad....waiting now for garage to ring back with price to repair.

 Sorry to hear that.. here's hoping it's a sensible price and easy fix. You doing both sides?

Gave a resonable price, they will try to nip up the bearing first, and replace both shocks....saves me trying to get it back to them, and paying another test fee.....it would be two weeks before I could get it back to them.

Today i have mostly been changing fluids

Replaced the oils in both diffs the transfer and gearbox

Noticed a few small pieces of metal attached to the magnet on the front diff

Im hoping this is normal

I also greased up the prop and the UJ's

Word of advice if you have a manual gearbox make sure the oil is GL4 spec and not a GL5
As GL5 can damage the gearbox
