Who is doing what maintenance today?

Replaced the speedo drive 'O'-Ring, as the old one had worn and gone a little flat, allowing a little oil to seep out. Greased the props whilst I was under there, and gave my center exhaust box a talking too, as I believe one of the baffles has come lose and is causing an occassional vibration. Might have to lose the center box  It is still the original though, so it hasn't done bad.

I also threw some polish at the bodywork, so now it's raining outside

Finally got round to sorting my windows out today.

The passenger side just needed a new rubber, which was a slight fiddle to get down the rear channel, maybe some sort of dry lube like talc or graphite would have helped. Now shimmies up and down like a good'un.

The driver's side has been becoming more and more intermittent the last six months, usually only working if given a thump next to the speaker and even this stopped helping a few months back so, sick of having to open the door to get car park tickets I resolved to fix it today.

The FSM has a very clear testing procedure for the windows and it was pretty quick to diagnose the motor as the culprit so I had to pull it out, this means the regulator has to come out too. A top tip here is that an Oats So Simple pot fits nicely in one of the big holes in the door skin but will do nothing to stop the window dropping in an alarming manner towards your fingers

Once I'd unbolted the window from the jack I took advantage and shoved the new rubber in while the window was out of the way. Motor off the regulator and it will work if I give it a thump on the ground so I stripped the housing off the gearbox and marvelled at all the carbon in there. Cleaned everything up as well as I could and tested again it all whirs away nicely.

All back together and the window works brilliantly. Not fast but I don't think they were from new but I don't need to help it up and the switch makes the window go up and down so I count that a success.

I held off replacing the runs because of the cost (£85 a side with very little discount available) but I have no regrets spending it now.

Had the windscreen sealed. Sealant had just dried out completely and water was pouring in. Dunno if it has fixed every leak in the truck, but it seems dry with a hose pipe so far. No ban here by the way it's been p****ing it down for ages.

Took the opportunity to take the wipers apart. I removed the turrets and pulled the spindles. The thin plastic sleeves inside had long gone. The wipers were wobbling around like an old weather vane. I took some plastic rod, bored it to size, then turned it down into a sleeve. I slit the sleeve up the middle and popped it around the spindle with some grease on. The I pressed the spindle and turret back together. Loverry . No play in them at all. Much better wiping action now as there isn't any loss or binding as they wobble and skip all over the screen.

Proper tidy.

Took my 80 for an MOT today - having not driven it for over a month as I've been away on hols, busy with work etc.
Started right up on the button and sailed through the MOT with no advisories  Even the handbrake passed muster since the fettling for last year's MOT

So guess who's not doing any maintenance today? :P

Managed to fit the bespoke spacers I had Air-lift make up, into the rear springs today.
Finally got the air bags to work as intended and can get 70mm of lift with bags inflated

Found a leaking fuel line on the long ranger tank again!!! 2nd time in a year. Changed that and the associated clamps.

All jobs now done, so truck off to Rust Master to get steam cleaned and waxoyled.

Put a new pair of batteries on so Dave's charger won't be needed again :) Lathe is almost up and running so I might see if I need to do what Chris did with his wiper turrets.

Hey Chris who did you use to do this, was it expensive?

£30 Tony. Spire Windscreens although I think they are part of National. It was going to be £60 - booked in as remove and replace. They looked at it and said 'bonded'. If we take that out it WILL break. We can reseal it though. And they did. It oozed out everywhere.

Chris

Jon, one thought on this fix is that the sleeve is very thin and a bit tricky. So looking at the turret there is plenty of meat in it. I reckon we could bore out the turret and make the sleeve thicker. The reason that I had to slit it, is because the head of the spindle is 'flared' slightly and you can't push it through the sleeve really. The turret is also bored slightly wider at each end leaving a tighter section in the middle, I think that they had two sleeves in there. A top and a bottom. The flare is probably to stop the spindle dropping back through the turret.

You could grind off the arm weld on the spindle so that the rod could be pushed in, thin end first, but then when welded, you'd melt all the plastic. I think that there will be a neat solution to this which might come eventually in a packet marked JW enterprises self fit wiper rescue kit. £9.99

Thanks Chris. Need to think about what to do with LB. Having said that it's not bad but if I can get it done for that price, its a no brainer....

I'm sure that'll all make perfect sense when I see my turrets Chris 8-)

trying to work out why the air bag warning light doesn't come on with the ignition, which will be an MOT fail now, ECU B fuse was blown, sorted now :D Also no doors open or centre diff lock lights coming on just needed new bulbs :) Put a centre diff lock switch in. Now got the stereo out so I can sort out the rats nest behind there and put a new one in with DAB reception.

rats nest sorted, might have a go at fitting the new stereo tomorrow. What is it with Toyota cigarette lighter sockets, this is the 3rd one I've had to fix where the centre contact doesn't have power and needs a solder bridge to the spade connector to make it work

Don't have the mounting plates for the stereo so instead I adjusted the steering box, changed the engine oil and filter, took the inlet crossover pipe off to seal round the EGR valves which were whistling and refit and took the rocker cover off and resealed it while cross over pipe was off anyway as I think it might have been leaking a bit.

Hi all, have been beavering away (or should that read 'battling' away) with more service brake issues than I could handle,
did a full re-pipe across front axle which went well but once the back end was started I realised there some fairly nasty bits
awaiting:

I've looked at the state of the LSPV before and it wasn't pretty and the bleed nipple on it was barely recogniseable
182.jpg

Tried to undo it with small stilsons thinking here we go then, the fun'll start if it snaps off
and it did
No choice but to remove it then!!! pics;-

Even the chassis bracket was rotten so thought for now we'll see how the system works without the proportioning
and piped up without it.
The rear calipers each had a seized lower pin, both sheared off so had to drill remains out.
The float in the mastercyl res. had stuck at the bottom so had to wash the thing out to ungum it

all this only half the story !

Only half the story mate..........

You could spend the rest of the night typing

Pics are

Hi Karl I've not stated yet how many days this has been going on and how many different emotions I've endured!
 :o :x   :violin:
If you'd have turned up at mine with a happy meal and a trailer I'd swop the the truck for what you were dangling in the bag.

disconnected the L sensor on the transfer box and Event Tyres fitted some Toyo Open County HT's this morning.

You keeping the tyres stock size, Jon?
Yep, plenty of clearance for raised man hole covers on the stock size  only bought 4 of them as well
