Gearbox slipping whats my Collie worth??

Why would gearbox be different ratio when your final drive is the diffs which do come is several ratio options .

Chas, I know the owner of Transmission Technology in Knowle, not too far from you I believe . His name is Ken and will give you honest advice if the box is salvageable or not. Tel no is 01564 779407. Good luck, Ed Norton.
Hi Norty,
I do know Ken a very nice knowledgeable polite old school chap and i was only thinking about him the other day his reputation proceeds him BUT he is very busy i think its a drive over there jobby rather than a phone call away but thank you it may be my next port of call

Shayne i dont really know all i remember is many years ago when me and my mate replaced a Rover v8 engine for a Isuzu 2.8 derv in a Rangie auto that it would not kickdown and you had to row the quadrant and it used to eat drive plates ie a ZF box sorry if it sounds 13ollocks

car-part.com great site to find yards having your vehicle and parts...
In the USA its based off hollander interchange and what used to be called hotline by salvage yards to share info... u can get good stuff for very fair rates

Its the difference in torque Delivery, a diesel being very torquey at low revs and the box being set up for the speed curve of the Rover V8. In You case now, you’re not changing the engine so a box controlled by the gearbox ECU still on your Collie will if otherwise identical change just as your existing one does. If the gearbox ECU were swapped for a petrol one then there would be trouble ahead.

There are differences in the characteristics of the petrol and diesel box on a Collie. I can only say this as for the past 2+ years I've ran them both side by side so I reckon I'd notice. These differences may have been caused by the different ECU's controlling identical boxes or different ECU's controlling different boxes. IMO you will need to do a bit of research to see if the V6 box is compatible. One thing I did notice was the V6 would drop into top earlier than the D4D and was less inclined to change out of top wheras the D4D happily hopped back into 3rd.
I don't know how this will help apart from highlighting the need for research on the matter.

Its not helpful to guess i know but conversely because the 1KD had about 50 bhp more than the 1KZ it uses taller geared diffs . Both mine are manual of course but i'd be very surprised if there was any mechanical difference in the gearbox given other than the engine everything else is interchangeable , for cost effective manufacturing i would assume .

With regards to ECU management surely the box only gets sensors that talk to the ECU .

I suppose we will never know as its too much money to gamble with and Chas , its sods law if you sell for cheap the exact box you want will come up for sale at a giveaway price half mile from your home a week later .

Pretty certain the boxes are the same. If you crawl under you're see the same stamping/sticker on both diesel/petrol models. Like Andy said, it's just the ECU that is tuned to shift the boxes different.

Hi All,
Sad but it looks like my Collie will be up for sale very soon as no auto boxes have materialised :confusion-shrug: its just sitting on my drive its got to be worth £1500 all day being in such good condition (except the autobox) Its a VX model with all the extras ie grey leather elec seats a/c sunroof has NO dents dings to the bodywork and has never been welded. The engine runs brilliant with no smoke or rattles and loads of power is mot'd until Aug 2019 this will make someone a very nice straight tidy Collie when the box is sorted please p/m me if interested any viewings welcome i'm in B77 :icon-sad:
Hi All,
As above for sale before it goes on eblag please p/m me if interested ?

I'd hang on in there dude.
Approximately 7 minutes after you have sold it half a dozen will appear on eBay. ..
I've been asking about for you.

Thanks guys but as can seen they are either too far from me or for petrol models i do appreciate all you help and encouragement but i am facing the reality that perhaps its easier to sell as finding a box with no issues then getting it fitted may be more of a gamble and lots expense that i am not really wanting at the moment:cry:

B77? There's an autobox specialist in Cannock right next door to CMC motorcycles - Bridgetown on the A5.

I've skimmed through this thread but can't see where anyone has mentioned the filter / strainer.

Thanks Chris for the heads up on the autobox specialist may be worth a call and you are right i didnt actually drop the sump and clean/replace the strainer. This did actually cross my mind but after the slipping i thought its a bit late now perhaps this is why the box is slipping due to my not doing it in the first place really hope not :o
