There's no such thing as a " good cheap Landcruiser", the market sorts that out. Once in a blue moon something lands on your lap ( like the mint V6 Collie I found in a barn) but its a once a decade occurrence.

For 7 grand he could likely buy two import prado 95's unseen and have a far greater chance of them both being better than any of his previous gambles .

Sounds like the 100's I was viewing a couple of years ago - all a good trek to view and all full or rust that the ownver "didnt know about" !

+1 for the Prado 95. When we were looking for 4WDs even the 80 series was about a third more than the 95. As for the 100 series that was way out of our league.

Our Prado has over 380,000km and still going strong. These are a fairly regular sight on Brisbane roads even though they are at best nearly 20 years old!

Pretty much so lots interchangeable i think .

Yes from that era anyway, Prado is AWD and has no 2WD mode.

I am toying with selling mine (MY2000) owned by me since 2008

My 5 kids have all grown up now, so simply dont drive it much

But a quick look on Ebay, and seems really hard to value

Yup i drove 150 mils to view an 04 plate ''mint'' 100 some 4 years ago, priced @ around £13k if i recall at a small trader, who proved to be yet another con man.

First thing there's a 4ft long scrape down the nearside down to the primer, this ''fully waxoyled'' vehicle the waxoyling consisted of a single pass of an aerosol can across the lower control arms and front cross member, then i slid under the back and shoved me mitt straight through a box section.
Never looked inside, never opened the bonnet, never even put the key in the door, 5 minutes later i'm on the way home again in me 2000 Collie which was in better condition.

Gave up looking seriously after that until one day the present 120 LC5 popped up at a motorhome sales centre having been traded in for a new m'home (my well heeled previous owner antenna went straight up), everything about this one was right from the advert to the underbelly inspection, even came on a brand new set of tyres and a pair of Mr T's batteries fitted 8 months previously, i shot across the midlands and bought it same morning it went online and it's been a cracker, have invested heavily since on rustproofing and servicing to make it last as long as possible.

I think you have to give up on constantly travelling to look for LC's of any description only to be disapppointed and just wait until the right one jumps out at you from the listings, the golden rule is LC's are never sold cheap, if they are there is always a very good reason why.

Glad your boss gave this one a wide berth, i'd have loved to get a 100 but the ones sold new in Britain got neglected from day one by many of their owners, many of who paid no attention to corrosion prevention and didn't have a clue what their vehicles were about anyway, couldn't even be bothered to hose the underbody down after the salt disappeares come April.

I know the 80 came with a heavier gauge chassis but it was a simpler more hardcore design overall and maybe didn't appeal to the demoralised by unreliability Range Rover set, which the 100 did with its soft suspension and powerful engines, maybe so many 80's are still good is because people who bought them knew what they were doing and in more cases took care of their vehicles long term, maybe the 100 is a victim of the type of people who could afford them new and assumed because Toyota have that well deserved reputation that their vehicles could be neglected, which is the complete opposite to looking after well made machinery.

Good 100's (good LCs of all models) will command stupid money for many years to come, even when the greenies outlaw us and our LCs, they'll always be in demand for export to more sensible countries.

Import 90 series have an LSD rear whereas UK spec got a rear locker , sadly the front diff isn't really strong enough to add an aftermarket locking front i.m.o but i've never felt it needed one . Suffice to say post apocalypse i'd opt for a 90 over anything landrover ever produced while being chased by zombies .

But i dont think Land cruisers command silly money, There are some 80s on ebay at the moment, One for 7 grand and the immediate reaction is it is too expensive, But just look what you get for 7 grand in a 110 0r 90 defender.... Not a lot.. There are two Overland prepared 80s on ebay for over 20 grand each. Are they worth it?.. probably.. When you compare them to Overland prepared Land rovers... Its all about what folk are prepared to Pay I guess.. When you compare what an 80 can do Over a Land Rover and the difference in reliability... Im surprised Land cruisers are so Cheap...Especially the 80..

The trouble with Defenders is that fashion/image has an extraordinary effect on what people will pay, you only have to look at Ford Escorts or really any Ford from the RWD era with sporty pretensions, ridiculous money for cars you could barely give away when they were first out of production.

LC's don't have that show image that Defenders (and Gelandewagens) enjoy vis a mainstream public and celebrity patronage..which puts massive value on these vehicles for some reason which baffles me.
The LC40 series hold strong money and the part Prado based FJ Cruiser seems to have captured the imagination and have strong used values, compared to other makes of competent 4x4's i think Toyotas are more expensive to buy used.

70 series was really the Defender's direct competitor i suppose, and from the prices being asked for earlier examples, particularly on the Japanese sites they are going up in value quickly, wish i still had mine which was one of the 3 litre Diesel genuine UK versions.
