LJ70 Build Thread!

Thanks Ben, but I don't want to take your spare, mate. I lost both the front and the rear badges, the squidgy poly-bag ones that go into the depressions. If you could post an address where I could buy some replacements I'd be interested.

Whoever the ARB distributor is in you're area/country will be able to get them for you, but they may not be bothered for an item that ARB sell for only a couple of dollars each.

I had a look through my envelope full of stickers earlier to see if I still had it.

IMG_1602[1].JPG

Found it!

IMG_1603[1].JPG

Happy to send it you it if you want it. :icon-wink:

LJ.

I wasnt happy with how I had mounted the awning on LJ as the clamps I had used could turn and the awning kept dropping and getting in the way of the back doors. :|

IMG_1565_zpswemcdqjp.jpg

IMG_1566_zps4epzezxy.jpg

So I decided to remount it.

Picked up some galvanised box section and black spray paint from Bunnings.

IMG_1583_zpsbt6bmw2y.jpg

IMG_1584_zpswmk2g7ck.jpg

Marked and center punched the box.

IMG_1585_zpsmj68bpfx.jpg

IMG_1586_zpsdutc4h5u.jpg

Got to use my new drill next.

IMG_1587_zpsdqy0mfwi.jpg

IMG_1588_zpsvluptdma.jpg

Pilot holes drilled.

IMG_1599_zpsuim2wvb0.jpg

Drilled some holes in some angle.

IMG_1608_zpswzrthvsy.jpg

Cut the drilled ends off.

Clamped in position ready for welding.

IMG_1615_zps4rgdvoiy.jpg

IMG_1617_zpsrhv9srya.jpg

Got it outside and painted.

IMG_1618_zpsy7rtiuxy.jpg

Bolted the awning on.

IMG_1620_zpsyqpchorq.jpg

IMG_1621_zpsoxbxrhjr.jpg

IMG_1622_zps1cegbmyi.jpg

And back on the car.

IMG_1624_zpsjix664yg.jpg

IMG_1626_zps9shlfzgf.jpg

I wanted to fit and use the Ironman light bar that came with RJ. It was the wrong length for RJ as it was too long to fit between the center ribs.

But it was the perfect length for LJ's bullbar so I decided to mount it.

First thing was to remove the old driving lights that had seen better days.

IMG_1567_zps0k7pgmsd.jpg

IMG_1568_zpsvk17mpcd.jpg

IMG_1569_zpshqmiw83w.jpg

The easiest thing would have been to mount the light bar above the top bar but that wouldnt have been road legal here in OZ. So I had to get a little creative with the mounts and counter sink and counter bore the bolts.

IMG_1572_zpsy2jkhtbz.jpg

IMG_1571_zpsytawilws.jpg

IMG_1606_zpsmfvaykz3.jpg

IMG_1607_zpspxtm1zit.jpg

That left a nice space below, just big enough for some 7" driving lights. :icon-cool:

LED lights have come down a lot in price the last few years and theirs some quality ones on ebay at some bargain prices.

I picked these ones for one tenth of the price of the ARB ones. :shifty:

IMG_1715_zps0rxaxjge.jpg

IMG_1717_zpsqnlqttiq.jpg

Quality mount and diecast alluminium housings.

IMG_1718_zpsysdxcswo.jpg

I picked up some bits from the bike shop.

IMG_1628_zpspnl1cbcj.jpg

IMG_1629_zpst0dpdd93.jpg

IMG_1630_zpsozhasewf.jpg

Bolted the bag on.

IMG_1631_zpshzadefw3.jpg

Found some old tools.

IMG_1632_zpsxzt9cwey.jpg

Wrapped them up in a rag and packed them in the bag.

IMG_1633_zpsos7u7gzo.jpg

IMG_1634_zpsa7csyvcr.jpg

IMG_1635_zpshy122yjs.jpg

I had picked up a headlight switch to mount to the handlebars so I could do the "Grey wire Mod".
The grey wire mod is where by you pull out the grey wire going to the computer which puts the bike in the YZ setup, making the bike a lot quicker and more responsive. :icon-twisted:

IMG_1636_zpsx8daxfsl.jpg

IMG_1668_zps3vpjshzw.jpg

Switch mounted.

IMG_1669_zpsald4pmm6.jpg

IMG_1672_zpsdqffw1tk.jpg

Ran the wire to the back.

IMG_1673_zpsiukndmxs.jpg

I then discovered some one had already done the grey wire mod.

IMG_1679_zps8izr7po5.jpg

But I wanted to be able to switch between the WR and YZ modes anyway.

IMG_1681_zpssqqjultw.jpg

IMG_1682_zpsw4i6jtnw.jpg

Air filter needed a clean and fresh oil.

IMG_1688_zpsi6do0ckv.jpg

IMG_1693_zps2fwmjcwo.jpg

Updated the service record.

IMG_1689_zpsdcngxrsk.jpg

And so with all the work done on LJ and the bike, it was time to get out and use them!

So last weekend we went camping and motorbike riding with my mate Dean and his family. :icon-biggrin:

I might do a similar setup on RJ.

I've started a new thread now to document my RJ build as otherwise it will just get lost in this thread. :icon-biggrin:

https://www.landcruiserclub.net/community/threads/rj70-build-thread.146337/#post-1420899

How did you find the swap between LED and Halogen on your eyes? It's one of my concerns as I find the very white light quite harsh - which is why I like my old halogen driving lights with 100W bulbs in. I think you should be able to upgrade the rectangle stock LJ70 lights to LED/similar.

I think the boots you got are the quite coloured versions of Delz' - hers are the orange and black combination...

Havent driven at night yet so not sure. I want to get some night pics showing what sort of distance and spread I'm getting from them. :icon-biggrin:

Most of the after market LED headlights arnt ADR compliant and so are illegal for road use. Some of the 80 series guys who have them fitted have been getting defect notices from the cops for them.

Boots look OK, havent worn them yet. I wanted the Fox ones but I couldnt justify the extra cost of them. When the US dollar comes down a bit and/or we have a holiday to the US I will pick up a load of FOX gear cheap. :icon-cool:

Don't like the adverts?  Click here to remove them
We (Delz) liked the look of the Forma dual sport boots as they have a decent tread on them as well as the support... but $$$s

Forgot to say, the rack looks really good with the little modification.

With the headlights, what about a new set of Narva Freeform lights and then a decent set of bulbs that are running a whiter light? All of that can be bought with ADR approval, and not over wattage.

Narva lights (I think these are the right size): 200mm x 142mm or 165mm x 100mm - I'm not sure which one is the right size, but I suspect one will be as they are fairly common on the older HiLux as well (in fact the main unit is used in nearly every Toyota of that era in the 1980s and 1990s according to ToyoDIY)

Although... you've probably thought of all of that already! :tonguewink::p

Today was another awesome Saturday!

Dean and I went and rode Duck Creek Road. :icon-cool:

IMG_1963_zpsuxsqlg38.jpg

IMG_1965_zpsxcfjbzey.jpg

It was much better riding up it rather than down like I did last time as there were lots of washouts we could jump. :icon-twisted:

IMG_1966_zpssa011r6o.jpg

IMG_1970_zps8ajqavqq.jpg

Followed by lunch and a beer at a little country pub. :icon-cool:

IMG_1972_zpsneqlb1xz.jpg

Tomorrow were taking Lexi to the beach again!

Thanks Andy, was a great day.

Still havent got the new Dobinsons springs I ordered for LJ 6 weeks ago. I love Dobinsons suspension but they are easily the worst company I've ever dealt with! :angry-screaming:

We've got a 4 day 4wding/camping beach trip in 2 weeks time.

I'm hoping the new springs will be here by then.

Bloody aircon stopped working this week.

So it went back to my local aircon place.

IMG_2155_zps9wpdmtct.jpg

$950 later and with a new genuine Nippon Denso compressor fitted its working great again!

IMG_2190_zpsh2q4pz3b.jpg

The new springs finally turned up from Dobinsons!

Went for KZJ78 rear springs which have 1mm thicker coils and are a lot stiffer than the LJ70 ones I had fitted.

The arse end was sitting quite low.

IMG_2178_zpsfe6vpu0p.jpg

And the springs were quite compressed, this meant it wasnt fun at times to drive on road as the springs were so compressed they constantly wanted to push the rear end up when going over bumps, which was quite un-nerving at times.

IMG_2179_zps6zz3dbho.jpg

Removed the old springs.

IMG_2191_zpszovsesbu.jpg

IMG_2192_zpsxaainmsz.jpg

IMG_2193_zpswepsoity.jpg

IMG_2194_zpsxquilmqn.jpg

Comparing the old with the new, they arnt much taller which is good as I didnt want more lift.

IMG_2195_zpsuyefeig8.jpg

IMG_2196_zpsgbz845k1.jpg

Slightly thicker coils.

IMG_2197_zpsf0i5ryew.jpg

With them fitted they are a lot less coil bound than the first lot.

IMG_2203_zpsuawu1nqn.jpg

The rear has gone up by about 30mm and sits a lot better now.

I just need to fit the adjustable panhard rods now and I want to put an anti roll bar/sway bar back on to make it more road friendly. :icon-biggrin:

As LJ is now more of a touring vehicle and I'm no longer driving the sort of terrain that I used to and I'm not going to run 37" tyres on this vehicle again I decided I could loose a lot of weight off the back end by ditching the heavy rear bar.

IMG_1913_zpspdtjqptb.jpg

IMG_1914_zpsmw3bp07g.jpg

IMG_1915_zps01cakawv.jpg

I sourced a much lighter tube rear bar, which I will need to modify slightly to incorporate a tow bar. Then I will get it shot blasted and powder coated.

IMG_1917_zpsk89fz52b.jpg

My plan is to put the spare wheel back on the door, but as I cut all the ribs out of my door so I could store the gas stove in there (which I rarely use now I cook over the open fire on every trip).

I have sourced a replacement door. I just need to strip it down and spray it blue.

IMG_2211_zpshgwxngr2.jpg

I've also had a bit of interest in my old rear bumper on Gumtree, so hopefully that will sell soon.

IMG_2204_zps8pbtzdum.jpg

That wont happen till after next weeks beach camping trip though! :icon-biggrin:

*Edit. Dont know why that pic is below this text, everytime I delete it it reappears. :icon-rolleyes: IMG_1915_zps01cakawv.jpg

Rainbow Beach Birthday 4wding & Camping Trip.

We've just got back from an amazing few days away 4wding and camping to celebrate my 30th Birthday.

I used my July & August RDO's and took Thursday Friday off.

We nipped to Aldi for supplies for the trip on Thursday morning. While we were there Bec spotted the camp beds/stretchers they had on special, so I opened one up for a closer look.

IMG_2273_zpszklckojo.jpg

Having felt how comfy it was................we left with 2!

IMG_2274_zps99owgifx.jpg

IMG_2275_zps7dgywrcv.jpg

They fitted nicely on the roof next to the OZ Tent.

IMG_2276_zps8cdosnmq.jpg

With LJ loaded we hit the road and just had one stop first to get some beer!

IMG_2277_zpsfvkgykn1.jpg

IMG_2278_zpsyeag0mlm.jpg

3.5 hours later and we were up at Inskip Point where people catch the ferry to Fraser Island from.

IMG_2281_zpsmz8zkese.jpg

We found a stunning camp spot overlooking the beach.

IMG_2282_zps0wh4fnqe.jpg

The tent was soon up.

IMG_2302_zpskyi0hqt7.jpg

IMG_2303_zpsq8umfwwc.jpg

IMG_2304_zpsst5iuzqo.jpg

New beds setup.

IMG_2305_zpsvqgseeml.jpg

Not a bad view to wake up to.

IMG_2306_zpsolkt27vz.jpg

It was then time to relax with a cold one and enjoy that view!

IMG_2326_zpsqhvai1oc.jpg

And got the fire plate heated up ready for dinner.

IMG_2333_zpskbochywe.jpg

I've cooked in worse spots!

IMG_2332_zpswadeblmp.jpg

The next morning we were awake nice and early to watch the sunrise.

IMG_2368_zpsjcpvcaml.jpg

I cooked us breakfast.

IMG_2370_zpsudjzpmg3.jpg

IMG_2375_zpstktgae88.jpg

IMG_2376_zpsv8syzizd.jpg

Then we went for a walk down on the beach and played with Lexi.

IMG_2379_zps0kjgxhfo.jpg

IMG_2381_zpspnuopyba.jpg

IMG_2383_zpsd4aj0240.jpg

IMG_2391_zpsfd3cgm0p.jpg

Then it was time to let some air out of the tyres ready for some beach driving.

IMG_2393_zps90d2kver.jpg

We drove to the end of Inskip Point first for a look.

IMG_2397_zpsnvckya0y.jpg

There was a convoy of 4wds waiting for the ferry which was on its way to pick them up.

IMG_2404_zpsgn8ej9nj.jpg

IMG_2399_zpsfmrko5kb.jpg

We headed to the next camp site South, where the beach access point is.

IMG_2409_zpsgtxuhmjr.jpg

We drove on and headed South.

IMG_2410_zpsl2ihvlwo.jpg

IMG_2414_zpscnqgqwqe.jpg

IMG_2415_zpsctagergb.jpg

IMG_2418_zpskl6ai6xd.jpg

We spotted some pelicans along the way.

IMG_2420_zpse25qpofy.jpg

We stopped in Rainbow Beach and did some shopping, then headed back along the beach to camp.

IMG_2421_zpsuikpdztp.jpg

IMG_2425_zpsr4xg7rz9.jpg

IMG_2430_zpsoqcyarl8.jpg

IMG_2433_zps563zck5a.jpg

IMG_2435_zpsekylucax.jpg

IMG_2439_zpshlp6os5t.jpg

IMG_2443_zpsmcyo8tja.jpg

IMG_2452_zpssclbydky.jpg

IMG_2453_zpsehggvn8h.jpg

Back at camp it was time to relax with a cold one and that view!

IMG_2460_zpsvmisbe9v.jpg

IMG_2465_zpskqwgamgt.jpg

IMG_2467_zpszjzwfao5.jpg

Not only were the new camp beds amazingly comfortable for sleeping on, but they pivot and fold to become sun loungers! Perfect for relaxing on next to the beach!

IMG_2537_zps8hea4ofb.jpg

IMG_2539_zpszunmkdkz.jpg

IMG_2498_zpsw2gec5el.jpg

IMG_2480_zpssxwpdmpd.jpg

I got the gas stove out and cooked some burgers for lunch.

IMG_2481_zpspxtfyf6x.jpg

IMG_2482_zpsulvspmxj.jpg

IMG_2483_zpstbfmqw1r.jpg

It was all too much for Lexi who took herself off to bed in the long grass.

IMG_2497_zpsa8fiti4n.jpg

But not for long.

IMG_2526_zpssqsn3k9o.jpg

We relaxed all afternoon and then got the fire lit and dinner cooking.

IMG_2545_zpsd0gpxdiy.jpg

IMG_2546_zpsxjbubbbu.jpg

IMG_2547_zps4uxlztpf.jpg

Chicken satay skewers and mash for dinner.

IMG_2553_zpsavqbqm30.jpg

After another amazing nights sleep we were greeted with another perfect sunrise!

IMG_2554_zpsvysev6pr.jpg

IMG_2555_zpscaiie2vi.jpg

I cooked us breakfast, on the gas stove again as the firewood we had wasnt great and due to the sea breeze and cold sand the fire was too dead in the morning to revive.

IMG_2556_zpsuptwrh79.jpg

IMG_2557_zpsjyg2xv8h.jpg

We packed camp up and headed South down the beach to Rainbow Beach.

IMG_2559_zpsfysidpn9.jpg

IMG_2560_zpsuykwhu6k.jpg

IMG_2565_zpstdnbixaf.jpg

IMG_2571_zpszrgqcsf9.jpg

IMG_2575_zps74ihkxan.jpg

I got off the beach, unlocked the hubs, aired up the tyres and headed for home.

IMG_2583_zpsrz7h3ije.jpg

4 hours later and we were home and I got the Oz Tent setup in the garden to air it out and so I could vacuum all the sand out from inside.

IMG_2588_zpswfnxi5kr.jpg

IMG_2589_zpsst8kk2ic.jpg

It was an amazing few days away and just what we needed to recharge our batteries.

The new stiffer rear springs on LJ made a huge improvement both on and off road. It feels so much more stable on the road and doesnt bounce around or feel unsafe!

The new camp beds/sun loungers are sensational! I've never slept so well when camping, it was an amazing nights sleep both nights!

While at camp one of the nights I was saying to Bec I dont know what we will do in a year or 2 when we hopefully have babies/kids. As LJ isnt big enough in its current form for us, kids and a dog.

Then it struck me! :shifty:

If I put the rear seat back in LJ then we can carry kids and the dog and I could then design and build an adventure trailer for all the camping gear, fridge etc.

So I'm thinking of a nice solid off road trailer with fully independent suspension and heaps of ground clearance. Low down I want to mount a 13" Optima battery to run the fridge and camp lights and a 100 litre water tank. On one side of the trailer I'd like to have a fully enclosed box big enough for the motorbike to live in. Then on the other side pull out gas BBQs/stove, sink and my Engel fridge on a slide. Id' also want a long box for the Oz Tent to be stored in as well as other boxes/cupboards for all the bedding. Gas cylinder storage for 2 bottles and a box for firewood. Then on the roof a nice big awning and solar panels.

Idea would be to make it as light as possible, so the frame work for the storage/kitchen could all be made from alluminium tube and then either composite sheet/fiber glass sheet or thin alluminium sheet to clad it all in.

Wont be for a year to 18 months but that gives me plenty of time to finish RJ.

The beauty of designing and building my own adventure trailer is that I will be able to still use LJ for family trips, or RJ depending on where we are going and I will be able to head off on the bike to do some exploring/hooning! :icon-twisted:

Anyway.....................

Next trip will be in 5 weeks time when were heading to one of the islands for more beach driving and camping.

We drove to the end of Inskip Point first for a look.

There was a convoy of 4wds waiting for the ferry which was on its way to pick them up.

We headed to the next camp site South, where the beach access point is.

Not only were the new camp beds amazingly comfortable for sleeping on, but they pivot and fold to become sun loungers! Perfect for relaxing on next to the beach!

View attachment 107185

View attachment 107186

I cooked us breakfast, on the gas stove again as the firewood we had wasnt great and due to the sea breeze and cold sand the fire was too dead in the morning to revive.

View attachment 107188

We packed camp up and headed South down the beach to Rainbow Beach.

4 hours later and we were home and I got the Oz Tent setup in the garden to air it out and so I could vacuum all the sand out from inside.

I'm pleased to see you and Bec enjoying life,we have been up and around the places you have enjoyed and you must do it when you are young as when older
especially when living on a small farm,it is much harder to get up and go as someone has to look after animals etc.Have you still got the aim of getting a block of land?Cheers.

Amazing camp spot and place to walk and chill out.
Good news on the coil springs

Trailer seems to be the way to go these days. I went to quarry on Friday with my trailer and got 1.5ton of gravel. I got Hilux weighed at Same time, 2.6ton and tanks empty, no people in and food and not all kit.... So loaded it's right one the GVM weight.... With a trailer you could put a lot of gear in trailer and weights will be ok

Thanks guys.

Agreed! Especially now that the sort of off road driving/trips I do has changed, a trailer makes a lot of sense.

Its surprising how easy it is to reach and exceed the GVM. I was reading an article recently in a 4wd magazine about it and they showed how easy it is once you add bullbar, winch, side steps, fridge, water/fuel cans/tanks, drawer system etc. Most 200 series, Hi-lux's and even some 70 series's are close if not over, weight, especially once 2-4 people are added.

Thats why products that increase the GVM are so popular over here. From certain suspension kits, the complete bolt in Dana rear axle for the VDJ70's, to adding a 3rd axle to make it a 6 wheeler, theres a few ways of increasing it.

On the trailer front I just spotted this out of the US. Now it doesnt have the independent, high ground clearance off road suspension I want and its a bit bigger than what I will design and build but I like how its 100% alluminium chassis and frame, must be reasonably light. :icon-cool:

Happy 30th Ben!

That looked like a great way to celebrate :)

Yep, many happy returns Ben!

The beach camping looks great and it's good to hear you talking about the "kids".

They will be lucky to have "outdoor" parents, it's a great start to life IMO.

LJ looking good mate, all credit!
