There are numerous posts on here with members discussing MPG figures on their trucks. Am I missing something coz I don't get the obsession.

I did some numbers so bear with me just a bit.

Assume your cruiser is your only chosen mode of transport, and you cover 12,000 miles per year. The cost of fuel per litre assume £1.50.

If your your truck did 18mpg it would cost you only £399 per year more than one that did 30mpg!

That's IF you did 12,000 per year.

Most on here do not do anywhere near 12,000 per year, but if you did and you choose to have a big diesel cruiser as your only vehicle, should you not just HTFU, bite the bullet and pay the price.

Is the search for that extra 2 or 3 MPG really that crucial.... if it is, then surely you should be driving something much more economical....and there are lots of vehicles out there that will do 45mpg+

Now you can of course tell me to

But please guys stop with the MPG woes.... or go a buy something else to drive.

I do 30,000 miles a year in mine.... I prefer not to think about the cost too much!

sorry your sums are wrong!
you applied fuel cost of £1.50 a litre to the gallons!
18 mpg 666 gallons
=3026 litres = £4540 a year

30 mpg would use 400 gallons, = 1818 litres = £2727

so difference is £1813 ?

You're quite right!!!

Yes I wondered where 666 gallons of derv cost £999, mind you it was only 40p/gall when I started driving and petrol was dearer at 50p. How times have changed !!

Hi lazz.

Obviously one of the posts is me. Putting £400 in my truck in 3 days in the past kind of hurts. If i was earning 100k a year it would still hurt. In the last two weeksive put £380 in my trucks. I was under the impression the 24v man did 500miles per tank. Not interested what MPG i get. Just the end result when i fill up.

In the past ive run on cooking oil

Tank of derv = £130

Tank of used oil = £10

Save £120 per tank

Putting white diesel in my trucks ATM really doesnt go down well. So i am curious to see what others get.

I put a similar chart up recently which showed that actually with petrol being cheaper you could almost run one for the same price as a diesel. Bear with me Lazz, this isn't a whinge. If you drive sensibly and get say 17 mpg from a petrol and in an oil burner hit around 19 (auto, remembering that diesel is now rubbish to what it used to be) then cost per mile was similar. Now you might be one or two pence out, but based on your 12000 miles PA that would be a couple of hundred quid. That's on 12k remember. So what's the upside? Well, you get more power, usually less miles on the engine when you get it, tidy interiors, dealer stamps and the best bit - they're cheaper. Most people then say fit a gas kit. I wouldn't. Why waste £1500 and lose the spare wheel space. If you can forget the bill purely at the filling station and remember to take this in the round then a petrol is a good deal. I would consider it. In fact I have. I do like the robustness of the diesel and the torque but for tarmac? Why not a petrol. I did test drive one and it was utterly gorgeous. I don't know what people have got out of them loaded, on nice long runs. Problem at the moment seems to be finding one that hasn't had gas fitted already. When they have, the price goes up of course.

Mmmn, got me thinking now.

Chris

Ive just brought one with gas on it Chris. The last owner told me 200miles on a run or 150miles to a tank up hill round town or towing. The tanks is a 60L

Ill be able to tell you if thats correct in a few days as ive filled the gas tank today. You are right though. They are beautiful to drive.

I'd like to see 200 miles on 60 litres of LPG Karl, I ran 2 different petrol 80's with gas last year and with a 90 litre tank which took 66-67 litres to fill got nowhere near that. I await your findings. Both trucks were low mileage ones in good mechanical condition.

Andy

I know what your saying andy. Today i was on 100 miles and then filled the tank to the brim. Ill keep you posted. I do love the petrol though. You cant here them at lights.

Interesting topic, something I have been looking at for a while
What sort of prices's are people paying for lpg, I have found it locally for .36p/l

Apparently yes, they are not a fuel station but a company that does LPG conversions on motor homes, they have a tank on site and sell the stuff

Thats very cheap.I may come down with a tanker and sell the diesel trucks

I filled today at 72ppL But morrisons etc 62ppL ive been told.

Looking at Ryan's example, that's about 10 mpg on gas. Which is rubbish really, but at 70p per litre, that's just over 31p per mile. Which is less than a diesel.

Just looked on AutoT and there are a couple of beautiful R plates going for around £3500 without gas. With gas is an extra £2k! If like me you only do 5k per year, it's some pretty cheap luxury motoring IF and I stress IF on road I can get half decent mpg. Obviously 10 mpg on petrol would be a killer.

See what you have started Lazz - exactly the opposite of what you wanted. But it's not about being tight and whining about driving a big truck - I agree, STFU and get on with it. But with the stock of these things dwindling and prices rising, there is some merit in the topic. What can you get out of a petrol, with good service and set up on a run?
Off road and around town, I don't care. But on a run through Europe could you squeeze 16? 17? More? Or are you going to be lucky to reach 12 driving like a fudder?

That'll be the price for using it for heating, they'll have to add fuel duty to stick it in a car fuel tank.
