TLC HJ61 total reconditioning

I practically checked almost everything. I don't want to miss out on anything that might breakdown only to realize that I left it out. The winch is the most abused and neglected accessory on the vehicle. If you notice the oil, it is black and has lost it's viscosity. I would say it never got an oil change.

But these are the situations that make the job so worthwhile, I would imagine. It's very satisfying to renovate a piece of kit that works, but in a poor state of maintenance, knowing that after your work the seals are good, the oil is new and the oil ways are clean.

Still admiring your patience, stamina and attention to detail Oding!

The winch is now disassembled and ordered the parts from Japan. I bought the bearings in our local car parts store but they do not have the exact replacement size for the seals.

I saw this mod in a different 60 series forum. I just wanted to share with all of you as I will be doing this before assembling the winch. I think it is worth the trouble.

I have sent the parts to be machined for the grease nipples. Might be done in a few days. I have also drilled holes on the rear bumper so I can install sensors for the park assistance reverse backup monitor system.

I will be installing the rear and front bumpers ahead of the winch assembly.

Nice Oding, I do like that step on the front of the 60s, could do with one of them on the 80, especially when trying to reach into the engine bay.

I've got some steps, but they're pretty wobbly when you're wrenching in there.

Cant get tired of this thread

The drum and the bracket for the winch just came in.

While waiting for the rust converter to cure on the winch parts before painting, I got to work on the bumper extensions. Quite a challenge as it is really in a bad shape. These rascals are expensive and I need to save. So I will repair it and make it presentable.

Looks like a gentle dose of the hot air gun may be needed there Oding. I'm guessing the glass fibre will be making an appearance.

I might really have to stitch the parts together to strengthen it. Then apply epoxy in cracks before applying fiberglass on the inside to hold the steel bracket in place. The outside surface will be applied with a thin coat of body filler for a smooth finish. Carriage bolts will hold the ext. bumpers in place. It will still look like original. I hope!!

Looks like a Frankenstein make over.

A great bit of stitching there Oding, and that will be quite tough too, when you've done
