Looking for a replacement 80

Really sorry to hear this Chris, news like this would be up there with my worst nightmares :(

Having read and seen all what you have done to GW over the months.... you must be gutted :(

From the way you have described the damage, I doubt very much your insurance company will have any issues with you wanting to retain any salvage rights to the vehicle

Shit Chris, I feel for ya mate. Hope you can at least save most of ya mods. Take care on the journey back mate.

Hi Chris, I'm shocked and really gutted for you, I know what a lot of effort and a great job you had done on GW. I hope that in time you manage to find a silver lining to this black cloud, and end up with an even better MK2 80, (think of those times you said 'if I did it again, I'd do it slightly different...'). Keep your chin up, mate.

With regard to GW's remains, you may find that the vehicle is no longer classed as such and is now, in the eyes of the insurance company and the authorities, classed as hazardous waste. As I'm sure people are aware there are lots of materials that make up a car and once they are burned some of them can be quite hazardous to your health. With this in mind it is normally the insurance companies policy that vehicles that have suffered a substantial fire, are hazardous and nothing from that vehicle is reusable, (assessing individual components would be a difficult call for them with regard to future liability and cost wise), so their remains are sent straight to the crusher. Going on your initial description it would seem that GW maybe too badly damaged to escape disposal.

I know in most cases if you keep hold of the car, you have a good chance of retaining the salvage after the claim is settled, but in the case of fire the insurance company, your neighbours, the fire brigade and even you and your family may not want the burned remains sitting on the drive for very long.

I known a couple of modified 4x4's that have been lost to fire, one was at the side of the road, so it was never seen again and the insurance co wouldn't allow anything to be salvaged. The second was fire bombed outside the owners house (mainly interior damage), it took a lot of effort to get the insurance to allow the vehicle to be released to a specialist 4x4 garage, to enable them to remove items like bumpers, winch, guards and long range tanks. This was probably only in the insurance companies interest as they could pay out a little less if these items were recovered. They only allowed the specialists to have the vehicle for 48hrs before it was crushed.

So if I was in your situation, I'd take pics, and then promptly salvage anything I could, roof rack, roof tent, spare & rear wheels, on board air, rock sliders, under body guards, rear axle (or at least the rear diff), you may be able to salvage the front diff (the axle may be too damaged) and winch bumper but it may be quite hazardous. Plus possibly the rear tailgates and some interior parts? Then I'd let the insurance company send the base vehicle away. After all you may need to claim for the damage to your drive as well as GW.

As has been mentioned, print out all the ad's for 80's, especially the expensive ones, and make a big thing about the low mileage and excellent condition of yours when trying to get what it was worth out of the insurance. As your well aware there's a massive difference between a good 80 and a worn out one.

Sorry for the long post, I hope some of it proves helpful. Fingers crossed for you. Shout if you need a hand to salvage stuff fast.

All the best.

Hey Christof - bad times buddy. Sorry I took so long to recognise you on the dog earlier... Hope your journey back from Glasgae was uneventful.

Here's hoping the damage isn't as bad as your neighbour described & GW can be salvaged in some form or another. I've no doubt you'll be able to retain many of the fixtures & fittings...

This is one thread that I'm not looking forward to seeing the pics on :(

Va bene

I understand what you are saying scott.

Under no circustances would i let it go. If they made me i would fight it. There are to many good cars, and to much moneys worth just crushed. They just arnt bothered.

Cheers karl

My god Chris, that's the worse news ever. I really feel for you buddy, hope the insurance thing goes your way.

Chris Im sorry to here this, I hope you manage to sort things out with the insurance company in a way that you are happy. I don't have much to add regarding how you deal with the insurers, everything you need to know has been said IMO. Just thinking about it makes me really depressed  It would be good to find out what caused the fire.

Let us know how things progress.

Pictures to follow shortly from Chris, but ferk me what a mess ! feels like when he gets the insurance sorted and a new motor it would be good to have an all hands to the pump to help him out with a strip down and re-build from all his buddies on here ? I'm certainly up for supporting him after all the help and advice he's given me !

I'm good at dismantling things and have a pair of hands to lend

A sincere thank you to one and all. Very kind of you and thanks for all of the advice. It's sound stuff. My daughter has made me a card which just about cracked me up really. I can't describe the smell and the oily residue that has coated everything inside. Fridge is a new colour, but hey it was still running! I have absolutely no idea what has happened. There is nothing left to tell the story. There are puddles of aluminium on the drive where the engine and other parts have melted. There isn't a single nut or bolt worth saving.

Well, as you can see from the pics, in the words of my dear sweet grey haired old Granny. "Son, I think it's fucked"

aaahhh mate, nothing much we can say

That looks bad. Hopefully there will be some good out of it.

 that is incredible. You just don't appreciate how much damage a fire can make.

Chris, happy to help out in any way when the time comes. I am VERY good at breaking things, and even better with a hammer!

On a different vain, if you don't have a drive by the time Lincomb comes you are more than welcome to drive LB!

i think those pictures display the worst nightmare of anyone who has spent a lot of time money and effort building up a vehicle and i don't think there's much more i can add to what's already been said. My condolences.
