Jammed my arm in the back hole while lying in the engine bay and just about reached it with my finger tips ... forearm is a bit sore but it'll get over it. If my forearm was any thicker I couldn't have reached.

my arm doesnt fit in the hole far enough. i dont think my wife will help either as she is 5 months pregnant. her days of hold the car part are over for a while. i will make a plan.

I have tried magnet probes, rod with blue tac on the end and it is a heck of a reach. Last time I used a small boy. That worked very well. Well, after we sorted out the difference between clockwise and anti clockwise. Digital watches have a lot to answer for. But the wing doesn't take much removing and I think if I did another (which I am not planning) I'd take the wing off for the bolting part.

I had to rotate and relax my forearm to get it in as far in as possible then worked it in using my other hand to squash the flesh through the hole, body in just the right place to get the right angle. Not very comfy especially pulling it out again and it took two attempts, the washer fell off when I tried to get the nut on the first time, was a real fingertip job one false move and have to start again :icon-rolleyes:

I think i will find somebody with a small arm to help me then.

Chris does the small boy travel to bristol very often?

Stu, one thing I didn't realise when I first got him is that they grow. He's now longer a small boy.

Dab of Bostick on the finger tip works a treat. Stick the washer to the nut and the nut to your pinkie.

Is there no immigrants washing cars at the side of the road down your way Stu they would break their arm to get to it if you offered a fiver reward .

I have found the apprentice we take the pi$$ out off for not being able to lift anything to agree to do it at lunch tuesday.

Started making some sliders, experimenting with a few ideas for changes in the step part from the previous design so it sits 30mm higher. Drivers side is done and I think ok so I'll repeat for the passenger side.

The legs and inner rail are the same as usual but the outer rail is raised.

Test fitting to check the step plate would fit ok they looked and function ok like this but not quite what I'm aiming for.

Have to watch the clearance at each end where the sills change shape and come down further

Aluminium unequal angle (3"x1"x1/8") sits on top of the outriggers and makes a pretty ordinary looking side step I think

They sit slightly higher than the standard side steps at the top, about the same at the bottom. The square box section rather than round tube used previously should work well for jacking.

Nice bit of fabrication there
Ready for some lanes now ;)

Oh, Jon! I do like your truck! Every time I see it, it oozes a "tidy job" Lovely work gone into that!

Jon, obviously lovely work, but why are the three outriggers so close together on the driver's side, is that something to do with the manual gearbox set up? I know they are different to the autos but I just haven't got around to playing 'spot the difference' between my two so far.

Having put the RTT on today, I really REALLY need to crack out some side steps.

Thanks guys :icon-cool:

Getting there slowly :shhh:

thats the normal spacing Chris, made up on the same jig as usual, only the step style is different. The front leg is set back to avoid the exhaust. Not an issue on mine with the exhaust running inboard of the chassis but it's a tried and tested layout so wasn't really worth changing. It's the passenger side that needs the front leg moving back to avoid the gearbox cross member on a manual.

Jon, where did you get your window wind deflectors and are you happy with them?

Is it? Gosh it looks so different. Maybe the angle. Ahh so it's the other side. Must take a look under there at that issue next nice day we get. I now have a big transmission guard on there now so hopefully that won't be a difficulty.

How were the plates and U bolts?

I think it was direct4x4 on ebay, not a great fit really and needed some trimming but with that done I'm happy with them. At the time I couldn't see any other options for stick on fairly small deflectors.
