As some of you know, I have been pursuing a certain Nissan Patrol over the last few months which belonged to a friend of mine who unfortunately passed away following a motorcycle accident. Anyway this process has been long, drawn out and complicated due to probate, setting up trusts and family politics.
However I got to view it yesterday having been informed it was to be sold by a sealed bid process and the person I was bidding against was his eldest brother who came in at the last second showing interest to buy it also.
It's a 4.2 diesel model with taller springs and a small body lift. No MOT or tax 37" tyres and a winch.
To compound matters the guy I was dealing with ( the middle brother) had not told me his elder brother was going to be there with his mother also, talk about awkward!

Anyway this is the truck, it started and ran very well and the only remedial work I could see was a small hole at the rear of each sill needed a small plate. :-

I had no idea what to bid on it, especially as I was bidding against his brother.

Anyone care to suggest what I should have bid or what anyone thinks it is worth.

Well its really only in export condition, and then whatever a few parts like the tyres are worth on top?

Bottom price for export is around 1800 quid I have just sent a rotten Ranger to Burma

Andy, give me a bell. Hey I'm still up. Or tomorrow.

since we have talked about these i have been looking and they are pretty rare. there has been a couple come up on eblag. i better con then this one and been around the 4-5 mark. this one has some parts but not branded stuff.
i think somewhere around 3-4k NO MORE then that. does it have lockers? auto ?
ps the roll bar is from a d22 navara not a lot of good from the look of the pictures.

I love trucks with that kind of character but i wouldn't chuck more than maybe 1200 quid at this one and even then it would be an on the spot impulse buy from a mate . From what i can see in the pics the mods have been cobbled together with very little sympathy or finesse , i reckon its a disposable weekend toy which is fine if you can afford it .

The swb is quite rare but i often see them on ebay while browsing classic cars , theres non at the mo but i found this which seems well priced to me http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NISSAN-PA...9019391?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item1e81f02aff

We didn't discuss it earlier, but I am guessing that it's not been re-geared. 37's really do knock the torque down and of course push the strain factor up. Should you blow a diff, what's that going to cost?

You guys run these 4x4 on perfect tarmac 90% of the time, give them good fuel, good oil, carefully treat them in fully-equipped specialist workshops, then as soon as they have a small dent or show signs of puberty you ship them down to us...

And with a big grin here in Africa and other such places we buy 15 to 20 years old cars with 250,000 km on the odo, call them "New Import", and take them to where only good cars can survive, and drive them another half a million kilometers and fifteen or twenty years.

You don't know what you have in your hands... :icon-biggrin:

So what would something like this go for where you are Philip?

Please explain "cobbled" in relation to this vehicle Shayne, I will be intrigued by your answer. Also you are a mile out on the money.

It looks a fun truck Andy. I quite like the SWB Patrols B-)

Did you drop a bid on it then?

How much is it going to cost to put it through a MOT? That would be the deal breaker for me - as it's hard to tell from the pics.

If that wasn't an issue, then I would say around £3750.

In the last 6 months I have been watching the prices of this model all the time to see if the time came to bid I got it right all things considered. It had only done a couple of hundred miles since its last MOT so I couldn't see that being a problem. The only remedial work I could see was two very small holes in the rear of the sills about 1" square. The most one has fetched with an MOT and fairly tidy bodywork is about £2k. They are thirsty for the performance so are quite an acquired taste.
However I had to weigh a lot of factors up, I wanted to come to a conclusion one way or the other. I wanted it more than I needed it as MUD should be resurrected this next few months but it gave me a working off roader straight away. It belonged to someone I knew and liked and was good at what he did.
If I don't get it my life won't change, someone out bid me and obviously wanted it more than me.
Anyway, the bid has gone to the solicitors dealing with the trust. In my opinion I didn't bid high for the reasons stated above. We will see. I don't know how long it will take to hear the result but I'm not worried either way.

By the way, my bid was £1695, if I wanted it as my !st off roader I would have bid above £2k.

Cobbled together = box section steel bumper which to me says quickest and easiest option , the snorkel appears to miss matched bits of drain pipe held together with cable ties and tape , the rear bumper was in the way or damaged - so he just threw it away , i bet if you look under the arch flares you will find the wings have been trimmed and simply left to rust , and even from the pics it is obvious the underside is very rusty , if Stu is correct the roll cage was a chance find from a different vehicle but it serves its purpose so it will do ! which pretty much sums up the vehicle for me . This wasn't a keeper for the previous owner , it was a toy to be driven hard until it died and so its likely the engine has been thrashed . A truck like this is worth only what someone will pay for it and for me that's 1200 quid , an Arab Sheik might pay a million for the same truck it all boils down to how much you want it and what budget you have to spare .

Obviously, I was well out with price.

Nice truck. These are reported to have a very strong drive train, stronger than an 80, as the front and rear duffs are both 9", where as an 80 has 9" rear and 8" front. (I think I've got that right, it's late here!). The 4.2 is also a great engine, but no ball of fire, as they don't have a turbo.

I think what Shayne is saying is it's a little aesthetically challenged. I suspect this is due to the complete lack of aftermarket parts for these trucks in the UK, so what you see will be custom or home made. Not that that's a bad thing, but sometimes beauty is in the eye of the creator.

The tyres on this are worth a chunk of money, I would see it at £2K as it stands, possibly £3-3.5 once mot'd and back on the road.

Is it auto? With an autobox, those wheels and short wheelbase it would be a good toy.

Jeez, that is ugly.

It looks like something off a Mad Max set.

I reckon its like marmite, but we are all have different tastes.

Sub-£2k, unless Chadr is buying it, in which case about £4.5k.......

H'mmm, perhaps I wasn't that far out with the price as I first thought!

The big killer for ageing vehicles over here is road salt and all the corrosion related problems that come with it. Not a problem you will encounter in Africa I would imagine. You only have to look at the exeptional condition of some newly imported but old and high mileage imports to see what the problem is.

Well guys, I've just had notification that my bid was the highest and so the Patrol is mine. The Idea was hatched when, looking into Dirty Gals engine bay Tony S said," you could do a lot worse than a Patrol 4.2 SWB", this was last May and my persistence has paid off.
The truck comes with a spare set of original wheels and tyres and also I think Cruiser wheels fit as well, 86k miles so its not worn out :icon-biggrin: There is no rot in the doors, the wings are remarkable for its age and certainly far better than I expected. They are original wheel arches under the extended arches, not cut away etc.
It has a diff lock rear axle which works and the engine sounds so smooth with no untoward noises.
If the roll cage is removed, the stickers taken off and a rear bumper fabbed up it would make a road car again.
Fetch it Sat or Sun, should me MOT'd by the following weekend and I'll be shoving Chris round Hollymolly:lol: the weekend after.

If MUD isn't at Lincolmb this will be, 1st time off roading in 4 attempts.
