OK, it rained all night.
I'm gutted because the heatwave broke on the very day of arrival, just can't believe it
I didn't want to risk a trip on the ridge in the wet, its clay-soil and grass, a lethal combination in the wet after such a dry spell, so what to do? Opted for an asphalt trip to a place called Pestera, which is down in a valley, because the higher we went the further we would bury ourselves into the clouds.
We set off down to the main road, but on the way, we spotted a garbage truck bogged into a side track, they've been installing a sewer pipe and had left the backfilling loose... and it was raining. No photos of that 'cos we were busy, eventually pulled him out (twice) using a tow strap to my rear shackles and winching with a snatchblock off a concrete cable pole. Someone else will have to post photos of that malarkey
Good-deed of the day duly done, we took the DN1 from our village (Comarnic) northwards and just before entering Sinaia, took a left onto the Targovista road. It snakes its way up to about 1000m, then there's a tourist road on the right. We pulled up in a layby so that the convoy could re-group.
Bugger me, as I jumped from the truck, a police patrol car pulled up. They asked what we were doing and I explained that I lived locally and that the rest of the bunch were friends who'd travelled all the way from the UK.
"Is that your vehicle?" I was asked, "yes" said I, "papers" was the reply...
While my documents were being inspected, I asked if the road was open (because it's closed in winter and on days with poor visibility or storms). "Technically no" was the answer, "but many tourists use it..." said the cop.
"Is it illegal to use it when it's closed?" I asked innocently "we don't want to be breaking the law" I added.
"Technically yes, when it's closed you can't use it" said the cop, "but people use it". "OK" said I, "so if we were to use it now, would you book us?" "No he said, have a good trip"
This road used to be dirt and rocks up to about 4 years ago. It's steep and serpentine and was great for downhill biking, now it's boring asphalt half the way, but the rest of it let us pretend we were offroad...
Some fallen rocks, just to remind us that nature is still the real boss
Into the gorge...
Plenty of water there now...
Ram's grey 80...
Mark looking like he's trying to run Wayne over...
and Helen trying to ram Mike, oh no, that's not right...
We stopped and took a walk, down loads of steps...
Then it was up loads of steps and this steep path...
And this is the gateway to a tiny monastery/church inside a cave
Traditionally painted, Romanian Orthodox...
Then a wander deep into the cave...
Back into the misty daylight...
The monastery buildings...
The roofs and cladding are in small hand-carved wooden shingles... impressive
The line-up
Making our way back up alongside the stream
and crossing over it
and the return run down the side of the reservoir, now the mist has cleared a bit
Ever had that feeling, like you're being followed?
Back through the gorge...
A look-stop, at the reservoir
Happy truck!
The views we missed on the way up in the mist
Lined up to go home...
More tomorrow...
