Run it about 500 miles and no sign of the overheating any longer. I'd call that a result.

Well that must be the easiest job I've ever done on a vehicle. Added a full bottle of oil to the fan unit (it was pretty close to dry) in under 30 minutes. Just need to test it now but initial impressions are that its working better.

Cheers Pete. From that the VC needed replacing (as I suspected). I ordered the oil last night from Macclesfield Toyota - was quite funny really. Conversation went along these lines.... Me: I'd like a bottle of viscous fan silicone oil please. Him: Never heard of it - where did you hear of...

Seems the VF on my Colorado is a bit poorly. Get the 'whoosh' at startup from cold but nothing at all when hot (even when at the very top of the gauge). Anyone know if a diesel one will fit a 3.4 V6? The V6 ones are rarer that rockinghorse droppings it seems....

In summary: Land rover #1 - 3.9EFi Range Rover Classic - Bought it sight unseen for £600 complete with LPG installation. Some people live nasty.

Dad made agricultural spray equipment (amongst other things). We had some stuff at home as he was doing development work and it was pretty darn good from memory!

    Some people live nasty.

If buying a pressure washer get one with ceramic components. Anything else will eventually corrode and stop working. My Dad (an industrial spray equipment engineer trained in the Navy) wouldn't touch Karchers as they weren't built with ceramic pistons etc. Later ones at the top end may be now...

    Ground Tents..........whats your advice..?

I used a Vaude Mk2 across northern Europe when cycle touring about 20 years ago. Awesome tent. Took everything we threw at it, was reasonably light, spacious and super quick to put up and take down. Probably the best tent I have ever owned. This is my current camping setup: Modified Foxwing...

    Thinking of selling my Colorado

Every report I've seen they were quite impressed. The only bad things I've found so far are an appetite for tyres (not too surprising with that much power) and some issues with the alusil coatings on the cylinder bores leading to very expensive engine rebuilds. Given I can pick one up for under...

    Thinking of selling my Colorado

Been having dark thought about selling the Colorado and buying a Porsche Cayenne. I know the Toyota will eat it for breakfast off road but I very rarely use the Colorado in that way as I have a Defender for that. The Colorado is mainly used as a commuter vehicle but with the added benefit of...

LRO don't have anything to do with sponsoring Billing this year (as an LRO forum moderator its been discussed to death over there). I remember a kid at school loosing an arrow nearly vertical. It went over the gymnasium (40 feet above the playing fields) across the tennis courts and came down into the roof of a classroom. It punched through the corrugated iron roof and finally stopped with the head sticking 4" through the...

    Help with engineering project

In theory a well executed torsion bar should be no worse than a coil spring (effectively a torsion bar wrapped to make a coil) and should be better as it cannot get coilbound so allowing greater total travel. The problem with torsion bars is the anchor points at each end are subject to enormous...

    CV joint question.

I ran mine for about a month with no drop links - including all the recent snowy period. No issues at all and the body roll isnt too much of an issue if you don't hammer into corners.

    Help with engineering project

One secondary advantage to a live axle is that if a halfshaft breaks it doesn't flail around under the engine like an IFS one does so it can still be driven (in 2 or 3 wheel drive depending on your lockers). This can be a benefit for when repairs cannot be effected on the spot. If an IFS setup...

    Help with engineering project

    1. By its very nature a live axle will be more robust under most circumstances than IFS. Its simpler and the joints tend to move only in one plane. Compare ball joints on the IFS with swivel bearings on a live axle for example. 2. Ground clearance/articulation. A live axle effectively pivots...

    Fabricated rear subtank

I wouldn't consider 0.7 mm steel personally. I'm not 100% with 1mm for that matter. The last thing you would want is to be on a rough track and punch a hole through it in the middle of nowhere. The other point is that if too thin it will flex a lot and eventually crack. I think I'd be looking at...

For the knocking check the anti-roll bar bushes and the drop links on the ends of the anti roll bars.

    Elm 327 obd

It depends on what the ECU will tell it. If the ECU supports it then yes. If not then no. Every vehicle will output different stats to the OBD port aside from the standard basic parameters required.

Shock news - might be looking for a Colorado

I don't use flash lube so that's not a factor. I've programmed mine to switch to gas after about a mile (based on temperature and warm up times) so the petrol cost is negligible.
  38. O

    Elm 327 obd

Yes its blue toothed to the phone or tablet. You can read fault codes, clear them and create dashboards for any OBD data your vehicle will output. For example boost pressure, MAP, inlet temp, engine temp, fuel rail pressure, throttle position - you get the idea.it can also graph it for timeline...

Shock news - might be looking for a Colorado

Thats how mine came. My nearest gas is 10 miles away but as its on my way to work it doesn't matter much. If there is no convenient gas supply nearby then you're right - it won't work. FWIW I get diesel equivalent of around 35mpg from gas.

    Snow

Can't see it being an issue. No snow at all on the M6 as far as I'm aware. I have snow at home (and loads of closed roads) and there is snow at work (North Wales with more closed roads) but once I get west of Wilmslow there is no snow at all until I cross the Welsh border!

    No 4wd..

Good post Bob, but as its a 90 it has independant front suspension so exposed front driveshafts. In this case a broken driveshaft will be very obvious (and noisy as it bangs about). A broken CV (or stripped drive flange) will give a similar symptom to a failed driveshaft and will be obvious by...
