LJ78 Build Thread

Shame, just not quite enough inertia because of the sharp incline approaching that step...

He’d have had to have all 4 spinning to get that last roll-over to work!

Great tracks Ben, you’re very fortunate to be able to choose what you feel like on-the-day... :icon-biggrin:

Long time no update! :|

We went to the UK for a few weeks in September, but before we left I removed the front wheels from The 78 to put off any potential thieves. :shifty:

IMG_1564.jpg

IMG_1565.jpg

When we went to the UK I picked up some parts from this KZJ70.

IMG_1657.jpg

My LJ78 was missing the badges on the rear door when I got it and seen as it is now running a 1KZ engine I decided the KZJ70 badges would look good on the back.

I also got an owner manual for it as it never had one.

IMG_1664.jpg

I also went and got some parts from an LJ78 being stripped for parts.

I got a pair of front door trims/cards.

IMG_1791.jpg

Which I carefully packaged up and after telling the girl at the check in desk it was a childs play pen, when she asked, I was able to bring it back to Australia for free.

IMG_1830.jpg

I found some pics online of KZJ70 rear doors so I could work out where the badges go.

IMG_1914.jpg

IMG_1916.jpg

IMG_1917.jpg

IMG_1915.jpg

Stuck them on.

IMG_1928.jpg

IMG_1929.jpg

The new drivers side door trim was to replace the damaged one which came on my 78, which I had done a temporary repair on but was never happy with.

IMG_1931.jpg

IMG_1932.jpg

IMG_1933.jpg

I didnt really want to cut a speaker hole in my perfect condition replacement door trim but I couldnt find any other place for the speakers.

Laid the old door trim on top of the new one and marked where the hole needed cutting.

IMG_1934.jpg

It would mean moving the door pocket over a bit.

IMG_1935.jpg

IMG_1936.jpg

Cut it out using a compass.

IMG_1941.jpg

IMG_1942.jpg

Screwed the speaker pod on.

IMG_1943.jpg

And fitted the new door trim.

IMG_1947.jpg

IMG_1948.jpg

The old door trim and passenger side spare trim will be kept until I get my brand new VDJ79 duel cab as the new 70's dont have door trims which cover the metal along the top of the door, where as these earlier 70's do, so I will get them re-upholstered and fitted to my new car when I buy it. :icon-cool:

My winch needed some love after snapping the old rope on the last few trips. :shifty:

So I got a new one out of the show room at work along with some of the protective sleeving.

IMG_1920.jpg

Australian made. :flags-australia:

IMG_1921.jpg

Fitted the sleeving.

IMG_1922.jpg
IMG_1923.jpg

Some on each end, on the drum end so I know when to stop pulling rope out as I only have a few meters left on the drum and on the hook end to help protect those first few meters of rope from the sun's damaging UV's.

IMG_1924.jpg

40 meters of 10mm rope. :icon-twisted:

IMG_1927.jpg

I removed the old rope and decided to give the winch an oil change.

Drained the old oil.

IMG_1950.jpg

IMG_1951.jpg

IMG_1952.jpg

Filled it up with fresh oil.

IMG_1954.jpg

And fitted the new rope.

IMG_1955.jpg

IMG_1956.jpg

IMG_1957.jpg

Rather than waste the 20meters of old rope I decided to splice a loop onto both ends and then I can use it as a winch extension rope for when I need to do really long pulls.

IMG_1986.jpg

IMG_1987.jpg

Then it was time for some 4WD Trips! :icon-twisted:

Last Thursday my brother in law came over from Tasmania in his KZJ95 and on the Friday we got away for a 4wd trip. :icon-cool:

We stopped and aired down.

IMG_2534.jpg

1st and 2nd generation Prado's together.

IMG_2535.jpg

Most of the tracks had only just been opened after being closed for 6 months over winter and we were the first to drive most of them.

IMG_2537.jpg

It wasnt long before the 90 series got delayed and needed a quick snatch recovery.

IMG_2538.jpg

The tracks were incredibly wet and slippery.

IMG_2539.jpg

While I struggled to get up the main track, Andrew managed to get up on the left hand chicken track.

IMG_2543.jpg

IMG_2544.jpg

Eventually I managed to get out of the ruts and followed him up.

But the hill ahead of us was just too steep and slippery for us to drive with the tyres we were running.

IMG_2548.jpg

So we had to winch.

IMG_2550.jpg

IMG_2557.jpg

IMG_2558.jpg

IMG_2559.jpg

Eventually we were up and continued on our way.

IMG_2560.jpg

As we neared the end of the track, disaster struck and I popped a bead off my rear passenger side wheel and badly dented my wheel.

IMG_2561.jpg

IMG_2562.jpg

Luckily I run steel wheels so was able to knock it back into shape with a hammer.

And pump it back up.

IMG_2564.jpg

And it was fixed!

IMG_2565.jpg

We continued on our way.

IMG_2566.jpg

We drove some more seasonaly closed tracks.

IMG_2568.jpg

IMG_2570.jpg

We would carefully drive around this crazy bomb hole.

IMG_2576.jpg

IMG_2579.jpg

IMG_2580.jpg

IMG_2581.jpg

IMG_2582.jpg

We spotted on the map an old explosives shed, so we stopped to check it out.

IMG_2583.jpg

IMG_2584.jpg

IMG_2585.jpg

Amazing views on this track through a recently harvested area.

IMG_2589.jpg

IMG_2590.jpg

Lexi was very happy to be out on a trip.

IMG_2594.jpg

We passed some huge trees.

IMG_2596.jpg

IMG_2599.jpg

Andrew got stuck and needed another quick snatch recovery to get free.

IMG_2602.jpg

It was by now 3pm and we had worked up quite a thirst 4wding all day so we headed for camp.

One of my favorite wild, unofficial camp spots Yellowdindi, which is a clearing in the forest at the end of a dead end track.

IMG_2603.jpg

The camp was soon setup and cold beers were being enjoyed.

IMG_2605.jpg

IMG_2609.jpg

IMG_2612.jpg

IMG_2610.jpg

Then the sky turned black and a storm rolled in.

IMG_2617.jpg

We set the gazebo up and sheltered underneath it while we had 5 minutes of torrential rain with lots of thunder and lightening.

IMG_2622.jpg

My nephew Lewis and Lexi were both scared and huddled up together on the floor.

IMG_2626.jpg

Then it blew over, the sun came out and it got warm again really quickly!

IMG_2630.jpg

IMG_2631.jpg

IMG_2633.jpg

We lit the fire and I cooked dinner.

IMG_2636.jpg

IMG_2639.jpg

And we sat around a roaring fire until late into the night.

IMG_2640.jpg

The next morning the fire was soon lit and breakfast cooked.

IMG_2649.jpg

IMG_2650.jpg

IMG_2651.jpg

We packed up camp and hit the tracks.

IMG_2652.jpg

We headed for my favourite track in the area, for some rock crawling.

IMG_2656.jpg

IMG_2659.jpg

IMG_2660.jpg

IMG_2663.jpg

We headed through Buxton and then the Cathedral Ranges National Park as we ventured deeper into the High Country.

IMG_2665.jpg

IMG_2666.jpg

IMG_2667.jpg

IMG_2671.jpg

I had to get my chainsaw out and clear a fallen tree from across the track.

IMG_2674.jpg

IMG_2675.jpg

We stopped to look at a hut.

IMG_2672.jpg

IMG_2676.jpg

IMG_2677.jpg

IMG_2678.jpg

IMG_2679.jpg

IMG_2680.jpg

IMG_2682.jpg

Lexi had a paddle in the stream.

IMG_2683.jpg

And we hit the tracks again.

Around a huge fallen tree.

IMG_2685.jpg

IMG_2686.jpg

And along tracks that hadnt been driven for that many months they were covered in grass!

IMG_2687.jpg

IMG_2689.jpg

I found another big tree across the track.

IMG_2694.jpg

And decided to try and go over it.

IMG_2695.jpg

I almost made it but got hung up.

IMG_2696.jpg

So had to winch.

IMG_2697.jpg

IMG_2698.jpg

Meanwhile Andrew got his chainsaw out and started cutting.

IMG_2699.jpg

IMG_2701.jpg

I positioned The 78.

IMG_2703.jpg

And dragged it out of the way.

IMG_2704.jpg

And the track was open again!

IMG_2705.jpg

We encountered a few more trees across the track but they were pretty small.

IMG_2706.jpg

So I just dragged them out of the way.

IMG_2707.jpg

Across a brand new bridge.

IMG_2708.jpg

IMG_2710.jpg

We headed down Bull Fight Road next.

IMG_2711.jpg

Then down a few more seasonally closed tracks.

IMG_2712.jpg

More spectacular High Country views.

IMG_2716.jpg

IMG_2720.jpg

We found a camp site along Messmate Ridge Road and got setup.

IMG_2721.jpg

IMG_2722.jpg

Cooked dinner.

IMG_2723.jpg

IMG_2724.jpg

And drank late into the night around the roaring fire.

IMG_2726.jpg

My phone died that night so no more pics until I had cooked breakfast on the fire, packed up camp and we hit the tracks again.

IMG_2727.jpg

IMG_2728.jpg

IMG_2729.jpg

IMG_2732.jpg

IMG_2734.jpg

We stopped at another hut but this one had sadly been vandalised. :icon-evil:

I can only presume that the sort of dick heads that take cans of spray paint on 4wd trips are the same dick heads whos rubbish I'm constantly picking up whilst away on these trips. :icon-mad

IMG_2739.jpg

IMG_2741.jpg

IMG_2742.jpg

IMG_2743.jpg

We continued on our way.

IMG_2745.jpg

IMG_2746.jpg

IMG_2749.jpg

IMG_2750.jpg

IMG_2755.jpg

A few nice river crossings.

IMG_2757.jpg

IMG_2761.jpg

IMG_2763.jpg

IMG_2764.jpg

IMG_2770.jpg

IMG_2773.jpg

IMG_2774.jpg

Then we were climbing high into the mountains again.

IMG_2775.jpg

IMG_2780.jpg

IMG_2814.jpg

IMG_2783.jpg

IMG_2784.jpg

IMG_2793.jpg

IMG_2795.jpg

IMG_2813.jpg

IMG_2815.jpg

IMG_2817.jpg

IMG_2800.jpg

On the way back we stopped off at an amazing lookout with 360 degree views just outside of Mansfield.

IMG_2804.jpg

IMG_2805.jpg

IMG_2806.jpg

IMG_2808.jpg

IMG_2809.jpg

IMG_2820.jpg

It was an amazing trip and I cant wait to get out with him again in the future.

Next trip is in 2 weeks time, again in the High Country. :flags-australia:

Brilliant Ben, great to see you out and about again, it’s been a while, and the 78 is looking as handsome as ever!

I’ve been lucky this year having had several visitors, so plenty of excuses to get the truck up on the ridge, close to home.

It’s strange that we’re in the throws of Autumn and you’re stepping into Spring. I’m looking forward to a cold winter this year, plenty of snow and skiing, if we’re lucky...

Cheers

My standard engine temp gauge had stopped working so I ordered a new sender.

IMG_3002.jpg

I was sure that would fix it as the old one had definitely seen better days.

IMG_3003.jpg

After loosing a bit of coolant the new one was fitted!

IMG_3004.jpg

Sadly that hasnt fixed it.

So I need to try a few more things with some help from the auto electrician at work. :|

I fitted a nice Focal sub/amp behind the centre console.

IMG_3050.jpg

And picked up some more High Country maps from work.

IMG_2860.jpg

IMG_3014.jpg

Then last Friday morning I loaded the Engel up with 24 bottles of Aldi's finest NZ brewed beer.

IMG_3061.jpg

Along with some food.

IMG_3062.jpg

And headed for the High Country. :icon-twisted:

The plan was to meet Matt in Yarck at my favorite bakery. :icon-cool:

I had only ever met Matt once and that was about 7 years ago, when him and Iwan came to Lincomb.

But Matt had moved to NSW, South of Sydney and got in touch with me about 6 months ago and we had been meaning to get out on a trip ever since.

Anyway............................

Matt couldnt meet me as he was having car problems.

His fan belts had snapped and they also ran his alternator and more importantly his water pump.

IMG_3289.jpg

But eventually he got it fixed and we met up and hit the tracks.

We followed a track which followed some high voltage power lines for a hundred k's towards the town of Bright.

IMG_3091.jpg

The weather wasnt great, especially as we climbed up into the mountains.

IMG_3092.jpg

We could see the valley below which we would be camping in.

IMG_3093.jpg

IMG_3096.jpg

IMG_3097.jpg

We set camp up next to a river down a dead end track and as it was starting to rain we set the big tarp up.

IMG_3098.jpg

IMG_3099.jpg

IMG_3100.jpg

IMG_3101.jpg

IMG_3103.jpg

IMG_3104.jpg

We had a roaring fire under the tarp that night and stayed beautifully warm and dry! :obscene-drinkingbu:

IMG_3105.jpg

The next morning I cooked breakfast on the fire.

IMG_3106.jpg

This is what I enjoy most about camping, my breakfast!

IMG_3109.jpg

We packed up camp and hit the tracks.

IMG_3110.jpg

They're the mountains we dropped down from the day before.

IMG_3111.jpg

Few miles of bitumen as we had to nip into Bright for supplies.

IMG_3112.jpg

Then we hit the tracks properly!

We stopped to air down.

IMG_3114.jpg

IMG_3115.jpg

Went through a few small river crossings.

IMG_3117.jpg

And then started climbing.

IMG_3120.jpg

IMG_3122.jpg

IMG_3128.jpg

IMG_3131.jpg

IMG_3134.jpg

Even though we were almost into Summer, there was still snow on some of the mountains! :icon-surprised:

IMG_3135.jpg

IMG_3136.jpg

IMG_3137.jpg

IMG_3138.jpg

Beautiful High Country views all around! :flags-australia:

IMG_3142.jpg

IMG_3145.jpg

IMG_3147.jpg

IMG_3148.jpg

IMG_3149.jpg

IMG_3151.jpg

IMG_3153.jpg

IMG_3158.jpg

And lots of steep rocky technical sections.

IMG_3160.jpg IMG_3161.jpg

IMG_3164.jpg IMG_3124.jpg

Fantastic!

You’ve got a great summer coming, to look forward to.

It’s -9C here today and winter proper is just around the corner.

Enjoy Ben, thanks for posting

IMG_3165.jpg

We finished that amazing ridge line track and popped out onto bitumen for a few k's.

IMG_3173.jpg

IMG_3176.jpg

IMG_3175.jpg

IMG_3174.jpg

But were soon back on dirt and then turning off for the infamous Blue Rag Range track.

IMG_3178.jpg

IMG_3180.jpg

IMG_3183.jpg

IMG_3185.jpg

IMG_3184.jpg

We reached the summit, where the Trig point is located but sadly the normally spectacular view was a bit disappointing due to the cloud.

IMG_3186.jpg

IMG_3188.jpg

IMG_3191.jpg

We then dropped down South Basalt Knob track.

On the way we stopped for some lunch and Matt bbq'd some sausages or snags as the Aussies call them.

IMG_3192.jpg

IMG_3193.jpg

IMG_3194.jpg

IMG_3198.jpg

IMG_3199.jpg

IMG_3200.jpg

IMG_3205.jpg

IMG_3207.jpg

IMG_3209.jpg

IMG_3215.jpg

IMG_3217.jpg

The last few k's of South Basalt Knob track are insanely steep and rocky as it drops down into the Crooked River. :icon-twisted:

IMG_3219.jpg

Through a few river crossings at the bottom.

IMG_3228.jpg

Through a few private properties in the valley.

IMG_3234.jpg

IMG_3236.jpg

IMG_3238.jpg

Until we reached camp.

Again as rain looked likely the tarp was soon setup with the fire underneath.

IMG_3239.jpg

IMG_3240.jpg

IMG_3241.jpg

IMG_3242.jpg

That night we had the most amazing fire! :icon-twisted:

IMG_3243.jpg

Breakfast.

IMG_3247.jpg

IMG_3249.jpg

The next morning we hit the tracks and headed up Cynthia Range Track on our way onto the other famous High Country track, Billy Goat Bluff. :icon-twisted:

IMG_3253.jpg

IMG_3255.jpg

IMG_3256.jpg

IMG_3257.jpg

IMG_3261.jpg

IMG_3262.jpg

We stopped at an interest looking home made suspension bridge.

IMG_3287.jpg

IMG_3264.jpg

IMG_3265.jpg

IMG_3266.jpg

IMG_3267.jpg

We continued on our way and forded the river a few k's further down stream.

IMG_3269.jpg

IMG_3270.jpg

IMG_3271.jpg

IMG_3272.jpg

We soon reached Billy Goat Bluff track and despite the warning on the map not to attempt when wet, we drove up it in light rain. :icon-twisted:

IMG_3278.jpg

IMG_3286.jpg

IMG_3279.jpg

IMG_3280.jpg

IMG_3288.jpg

IMG_3291.jpg

IMG_3292.jpg

IMG_3293.jpg

IMG_3294.jpg

IMG_3295.jpg

IMG_3296.jpg

IMG_3297.jpg

IMG_3298.jpg

We then drove Valencia Creek track all the way South to Briagalong and then headed back to Melbourne along the freeway.

IMG_3300.jpg

IMG_3290.jpg

It was another amazing trip!

And the best bit is I'm heading back again next weekend! :flags-australia:

Great trip there Ben. Shame it wasn’t better weather but hope next weekend will be.

Great trip there Ben. Shame it wasn’t better weather but hope next weekend will be.

Thanks Rich.

The weather for the next trip was stunning! Well day 1 and 2 anyway, day 3 we got some rain. :icon-cool:

Just about to write the next trip report now! ;)

Hey Ben, other breakfasts are available you know! :icon-biggrin:

They are, but non of them compare! :shifty:

Those breakfasts I cook on the fire when camping are my favorite bit of the entire camping experience! :banana-angel:

I left my house at 6am on the Friday for the 4 hour drive to Bright.

IMG_3384.jpg

Where I met up with the lovely Stephen and Fran, the Wondering Hedgehog, global overlanders! :icon-cool:

As they were nearing the end of their year long adventure on this continent and had made their way down to Melbourne I wanted to give them a tour of my favourite 4wd destination on the planet, the stunning Victorian High Country! :flags-australia:

I made the decision on the previous trip that on this trip we wouldnt be just driving 4wd tracks but would drive all the high lights and use some of the faster dirt roads in between, in order for us to cover more distance and be able to see lots of different areas. :icon-biggrin:

I also wanted this trip to be a more relaxing trip than the normal ones where we drive for 9-10 hours off road for 3 days and then return home knackered. I wanted it to be a more chilled out trip with lots of time at camp socialising. :obscene-drinkingbu:

So we left Bright and headed for one of the most famous tracks in the High Country and one of the ones with the most amazing ridge tracks, Blue Rag Range track.

We stopped to grab some pics on the way, in one of the chain fitting bays on the main dirt road that people use to get to the Mount Hotham ski resort.

IMG_3387.jpg

IMG_3388.jpg

IMG_3385.jpg

We soon reached the turn off for the dirt road to Dargo and then the turn off for Blue Rag Range, where we aired down.

IMG_3389.jpg

IMG_3392.jpg

We followed another group up.

IMG_3395.jpg

IMG_3397.jpg

And when we got to the top were rewarded with stunning 360 degree views!

IMG_3398.jpg

Stephen reaching the top and driving past the Trig point.

IMG_3399.jpg

IMG_3400.jpg

IMG_3401.jpg

We didnt stay too long as I had Lexi with me and as this area was national park (where dogs arnt allowed) she had to stay in the car, but I wanted to let her out for a break.

So we headed back down the way we had come.

IMG_3402.jpg

Then continued on the main dirt road to Dargo where we all went into the iconic pub (Lex included) for a well deserved beer.

IMG_3404.jpg

Before traveling a few k's North West to the old gold mining area of Crooked River.

Where we had to negotiate lots of river crossings.

IMG_3405.jpg

IMG_3408.jpg

IMG_3412.jpg

IMG_3413.jpg

We set up camp next to the track between 2 of the river crossings, surrounded by abandoned gold mines shafts and slag heaps.

Today this area is idyllic and peaceful but 200 years ago it would have been a very busy, noisy place as gold fever gripped the country!

IMG_3415.jpg

IMG_3416.jpg

IMG_3417.jpg

After a lovely evening around the fire chatting, eating and drinking, the next morning we continued with the track to drive the rest of the many river crossings on the Crooked River track.

IMG_3419.jpg

Some of the crossings had really rocky, washed out entrances and exits, which required rear lockers to be engaged. :icon-twisted:

IMG_3421.jpg

IMG_3423.jpg

At the end of the track there is a very steep climb from the bottom of the valley to the top.

IMG_3424.jpg

Where the views were just stunning.

IMG_3427.jpg

We stopped for some pics and Lex stretched her legs.

IMG_3429.jpg

Then we were dropping right down to the bottom of the valley again, on the Collingwood Spur track.

IMG_3431.jpg

IMG_3432.jpg

IMG_3435.jpg

IMG_3436.jpg

Through a few more river crossings.

IMG_3438.jpg

IMG_3440.jpg

IMG_3443.jpg

Across one huge one.

IMG_3446.jpg

To the high light of the day, the infamous Billy Goat Bluff track. :icon-cool:

The High Country covers a vast area of thousands of square miles and out of the thousands of tracks that criss cross it, Billy Goat Bluff and Blue Rag Range are 2 of the most famous and iconic
out of them all!
:flags-australia:
Billy Goat Bluff is steep, rocky and technical but the views are out of this world! :icon-twisted:

We climbed up steeply from the valley below.

IMG_3448.jpg

IMG_3449.jpg

IMG_3450.jpg

Up to the helipad where we briefly stopped for a pic as the track turns 90 degrees to the left.

And then we started the long steep climb to the top.

IMG_3451.jpg

View looking back towards the helipad we came from.

IMG_3453.jpg

IMG_3454.jpg

IMG_3455.jpg

IMG_3456.jpg

There was a bit of traffic at the top and a few guys with car troubles who had decided to turn around.

This pleased me immensely as it meant we could jump out and grab some pics without feeling guilty for holding all the traffic up.

This top section is a very narrow ridge line drive with almost sheer drops off the side and the views are incredible!

IMG_3457.jpg

I look forward to seeing Stephens pics as I'm sure they are far superior to my Iphone pics!

IMG_3460.jpg

IMG_3461.jpg

IMG_3462.jpg

We reached the forest at the top and dropped down the easy dirt road.

IMG_3463.jpg

To the junction where we turned left to go up to the pinacles.

As this area is also national park I waited with the cars and Lexi and Stepehen and Fran headed up to the fire tower. As it was a hot day there was a guy in the tower watching for bush fires who Stephen had a chat with.

Again I look forward to seeing their pics as I know the view from up there on such a clear sunny day would have been spectacular.

IMG_3465.jpg

We headed South to the town (hamlet) of Licola where we stopped for lunch, ice creams and fuel.

We then headed North West a few k's to a camp site for the night.

The track to the campsite was very steep and didnt look well used at all.

We soon reached camp.

And Lexi had a refreshing dip in the stream.

IMG_3471.jpg#

We set camp up.

IMG_3472.jpg

IMG_3473.jpg

I love the camper on Stephen and Fran's VDJ79! IMG_3474.jpg

IMG_3475.jpg

It began to rain lightly so I set my awnings up and cooked dinner under cover.

IMG_3476.jpg

Happy Dog!

IMG_3478.jpg

The next morning we were woken early by the rain.

Thanks to a splash of petrol to start the fire followed by a glug of diesel to get it roaring I was soon able to cook breakfast.

IMG_3479.jpg

IMG_3480.jpg

IMG_3481.jpg

Just for Chris...............

IMG_3482.jpg

We packed up camp and hit the tracks.

I had planned on driving some hard tracks on day 3 but as we had had a lot of rain neither me of Stephen felt comfortable driving those tracks in the wet.

So we changed course very slightly and instead headed over the top of Mount Skene.

Squeezed under some fallen trees.

IMG_3486.jpg

IMG_3487.jpg

Up to the summit.

IMG_3488.jpg

In winter this is a popular destination for 4wders who come to play in the snow.

We dropped down to Jamison where we said our goodbyes and I headed for home.

It was a great trip and I really enjoyed meeting and spending time with Stephen and Fran and hope to catch up with them again in the future.

I look forward to following their year long adventure around South America in 2020.
